Does the 3X add-on lens for the Nikon 990 exist?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I would like to know if the 3X lens for the 990 exists as i have heard that it doesn't. If it does could you tell me how large in size it is and if you thought it was a good telephoto lens for your use. Thankyou.

I tried to buy a 3X two weeks ago and the dealer couldn't find a Nikon part number for it. After a phone call he informed me that it had not gone into production yet.

As to how large it is perhaps you can extrapolate from the size of the 2X which is 2 1/4 inches long and 2 1/2 inches across the lens cap. That 2 1/2 inches across is not a misprint. It is huge and completely covers the viewfinder.

Note that these are not telephoto lenses (which would replace the existing lens) but tele converters or extenders which attach to the existing lens multiplying its effect (or affect depending on how much attention you paid in grammar school.)
