Photo borders

Help! I've successfully scanned 35 mm pictures on Canon CanoScan 6...(can't remember exact numbers - it's my dad's). Have gone in and sized pictures, etc., in the Adobe appl. that came with this scanner. AND edited out undesired things in Paint, etc. NOW, I need a border (NOT a pretty picture border, like for a card, etc.), but a border that will make the picture fade into a white background (like a feather, etc.). I have spent 10 hours with Adobe, and cannot simply find a border that affects outer edge of picture in some way. They all are actual picture borders (like leaves, etc). Any ideas. This is for a band, want to print on white stock paper, and simply do not want perfect square border, but "erasing" or "smudging" in Adobe is ridiculous! Knew someone that had different scanner, and had an appl. that had these type borders, but we do not communicate now, so not sure which one. Any ideas?

Jennifer, I assume you have Photoshop Light Edition and I am not familiar with its features, but here goes, Make a selection with the marquee tool smaller than your image area, feather that selection however many pixels you wish, go to select>inverse, then go to edit>clear. you may have to do two or more clears. This should work fine. It's really pretty easy.

There are a number of ways to do this, the easiest I've found is to make a selection (try feathering around 10 pixels for small images) and inverse as in the previous post, then apply a graphic pen filter with a stroke length of 1 and a light/dark balance of 0. Interesting effects can also be achieved by fading this filter out and slowly bringing back the image.
