David Yulee Railroad from Fernandina to Cedar Key, FL

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Shortline, Narrow Gauge and Industrial Railroading : One Thread

Do you know anything about the railroad David Yulee built from Fernandina to Cedar Key in Fla, in the mid-1800's? I'm trying to find out information about it, and the people who built it.

Thank you very much for the responses to my question about this railroad. Is there any information in the museum about the builder, David Yulee, and the people who worked for him at the time? It is a fascinating snippet of Florida's history---I had an ancestor who worked for David Yulee as an accountant during those years, William Center.

You can find more information about the original Florida Railroad, and David Levy Yulee, on our Archer (Florida) Historical Society website. Goto www.afn.org/~archer. I am the 2nd Vice Pres. of the AHS. Archer was one of the stops on the original line. Archer is a little town about 10 miles southwest of Gainesville Fl. John A. Leynes Jr. jaleynes@bellsouth.net

Your best bet would be to get a copy of the reprint of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society's Bulletin # 86. This has a great narrative of Yulee's railroad as well as the history of all pre-1900 railroads in Florida. They still have plenty in stock.

Write to them for price: The Southeast Chapter of the R&LHS P.O. Box 664 Jacksonville, FL 32201
