PREMIERSHIP NEWS 23/07/2000 12:19 Club Links Newcastle United ROBSON TO PIP TURKS TO SIGN SERGEN? by Jamie Dixon

BOBBY ROBSON is rumoured to be lining up a swoop for Turkish international Sergen Yalcin this week - a move that will infuriate Uefa Cup winners Galatasaray.

Sergen is currently plying his trade in his native Turkey with Siirtjetpaspor, but spent a large part of last season on loan to Galatasaray, who were reportedly expecting to have first option on signing the 27-year-old.

However, reports in the English press on Sunday are suggesting that the Newcastle United boss is now set to beat the Turkish giants to capture the talented playmaker's services for next season.

The News of the World quoted a spokesman for Siirtjetpaspor as saying: "We can confirm we will be handing Sergen over to Newcastle. We held lengthy talks this week with Newcastle officials and both ourselves and the player have now agreed terms.

"There were many interested clubs but he set his heart on playing in the English Premiership. He will train with us on Monday before he goes to England later in the week for a medical."

Newcastle were unavailable for comment on the proposed deal on Sunday but, should the deal be confirmed, Robson will take his summer spending past the #15 million mark, having already brought Carl Cort, Daniel Cordone and Christian Bassedas to the club during the close season.
