Which is SMALLER, 4 picoliter or 2 picoliter?
-- Arnie Abegg (a2@earthlink.net), July 22, 2000
A picoliter is one billionth of a liter. 2 picoliters is half as much as 4 picoliters.

Oops. That should have been one trillionth (10 to the -12th power), not billionth.

Phew, glad we got that picoliter/billionth/trillionth thing cleared up... My martinis had WAAAAAY too much Vermouth in them! ;-P

You were right the first time Steve. A European billion (the real deal) is a million million. A picolitre is 0.000000000001 litre. And how could 4 of something possibly be smaller than 2 of something?

How can 4 be smaller than a 2 you ask? Well..in fractions 1/4 is half the size of 1/2
