I believe it was originally a baseball stadium ITK. These are usually only seated on three sides - behind home-plate and up the two adjacent sides.
Some stadiums do have some cheaper seating on the 4th side, ie furthest away from HP - these are called "the bleachers" to answer a question on another thread.
