Does anyone have a recommended time for HP-5+ at EI 200 in Rodinal? I would prefer a dilution of 1:50 or higher. I also need recommended times for Delta 400 and Verichrome Pan in Rodinal at high dilutions.

For HP5+ try 7'15"/75F Rodinal 1:50. I don't recall the EI for that but I think it was about 200; I ordinarily add 20g/L sodium sulfite to the working solution for this combo to get EI 320. It isn't enough sodium sulfite to make mush grain.

My only experience with Delta 400 in Rodinal 1:50 gave grain that looked sorta like oatmeal.

Here are some EI's / times for Verichrome Pan in full strength D76 at 20oC ;

N+2 ; EI 400 ; 12.5 minutes

N+1 ; EI 250 ; 10 minutes

N ; EI 125 ; 7 minutes

N-1 ; EI 80 ; 6 minutes

N-2 ; EI 50 ; 4.5 minutes

Not quite what you asked for, but I hope it helps you with this beautiful film. I wish it was available in 4x5. Regards

Ed...jim here...I'm the guy that asked the Delta 3200 question that prompted you to construct the _GREAT_ Delta 3200 chart on your site. Anyhow several years ago I received a paper from Agfa detailing the use of Rodinal at 1+25, 1+50 and 1+100 dilutions...it is somewhat out of date as some film emulsions have changed but I know that it works great for TriX. The paper suggests a standard time of 20 minutes for all 1+100 and 15 minutes for all 1+50 dilutions. What changes is the EI you shoot the film at and the contrast index the neg produces...(I'm not sure what this contrast index means, perhaps you could explain?). So here goes...all the following for 35mm or 120 at 20 C or 68 F with constant aggitation for the first minute and then 5 seconds every additional 30 seconds...which for me works as 20 gentle complete inversions in the first minute and one gentle complete inversion for each remaining 30 secondsyou would shoot HP5+ at EI 160 for Rodinal at 1+100 (20 minutes)...Agfa does not recomend HP5+ at 1+50 and they rated HP5+ at 320 in 1+25 Rodinal for 8 minutes...Now TriX was another story...TriX is rated at EI 400 for 1+100 (20 minutes)or EI 250 at 1+50 (15 minutes) and it looks _great_ although I prefer Agfa APX 400 at EI 250 for 1+100 (20 minutes)...I will have to check the sheet for Delta 400 as I do not remember if there was a time for it (it may not have been released when the sheet was written)...I will also check for Verichrome Pan...email me if you have any questions or if you want me to fax the sheet...thanks for all your help in the past...jim

John, Thank you for calling me out on HP5+/Rodinal. I am unable to document my findings with that combination in a large series of film/developers which I tested last year. Please excuse my unintentional arrogance in shooting off my mouth (with my brain in neutral).

Well I can think of a couple of ways it could be considered to suck; big grain and lower EI being the two most prominent ones. Adding from 20 to 50 g/L sodium sulfite to the working solution will help, although not tremendously.

Larger formats help a lot.

I just received an update of the Rodinal at 1+100 Chart that I wrote of above. The update lists HP5+ shot at EI 160 in Rodinal at 1+100 at 68 degrees for 20 minutes, contrast is .50. It lists HP5+ at EI 100 in Rodinal at 1+100 at 68 degrees for 15 minutes, contrast is .45. Delta 400 is listed at EI 160 at 1+100 at 68 degrees for 20 minutes, contrast .60 or EI 125 at 1+100 for 15 minutes, contrast is .50. My Agfa rep promises to get me a time / EI for Verichrome...I'll list it as soon as i receive it...jim

Ed, The following is from the Photo Lab Index dated 1980. HP5 -- gives brilliant, full scale negatives with remarkable detail in both highlights and shadow areas.

HP5 in Rodinal 1+75 -- ISO 200 (20)C 16 min (24)C 10 1/4 min

The development times are given for negatives printed in condenser enlargers with normal average scene brightness on grades 2 and 3 paper. The data assumes processing in a spiral tank with agitation for the first 10 seconds of development and then for 10 seconds every minute for the remainder of the development time. For continuous agitation reduce time by 25 to 40 percent.

The FP-4 chart mentions contrast development to a G of 0.55. I assume 0.55 also applies to HP5 data.

I looked up Agfa and Rodinal and came up with info for Plus X, a similar emulsion to Verichrome.

Plus X in Rodinal 1:100 ISO 125 (20)C 11 min Plus X in Rodianl 1:75 ISO 160 (20)C 12 min

Directions: Agitate continuously for the first minute, After the first minute, every thirty seconds give nild agitation for about five seconds, and continue this method until the desired development time as been achieved. For 72 degress decrease development time by 20%. Sorry, no contrast reference point was given but should be the same as current Rodinal directions.
