I'll be without my 'puter for a week and miss all the reports from the USA matches :-(( Still next year I have conferences in California (Lake Tahoe-June) and Brisbane (August) so may get to meet some overseas BBSers.

True - that must mean that you are eating in our favourite local restaurant - The Thatched Cottage! Actually, it`s my hubbies favourite, but it runs a very close second to the Chewton Glen for me.

Hope you enjoy it as much as we do - and well done to your daughter too! It`s a shame you are just down for a flying visit - we could have met up for a noggin! Next time perhaps?(:o)

True,

Watch out for Swiss food mate....it's SHIT! bloody gurkins and dodgy mustard sauces on everything.....they're all germans in disguise anyway....

Galaxy,

The Chewton Glen eh.....very posh.....I once nearly stayed there....

Galaxy, Galaxy, Yes, we've been there a few times. Like Gav I did have serious doubts about Swiss food having lived on Rosti mit alles on climbing trips. But it is a charming place suitable for a lady of your refined sensibilities. We have to sell my daughter's flat to pay for the SEASON TICKETS etc. so we will be down in early September to tart the place up - so a noggin it will be.

Gav - divvnt show yer ignorance man in front of the lasses.

Galaxy,

>>> I shall not be letting my husband slice the chillies!!!! <<<

With my wife having persuaded me to become an apprentice cook since I became "self-unemployed", I don't suppose you would care to elaborate on this comment?
No? My guess was correct then? Hmmmhh!

Look forward to meeting you True!(:o)

Gav - The Chewton Glen is divine! However, it is also extremely pricey, and though I`d love to say we dine there frequently, it is definately one we save for high days and holidays! (`Save` having a very appropriate double meaning!) (:o)

Clarky - you obviously missed the thread where I described the utter chaos created in the kitchen one afternoon not too long ago by my hubbie. He did rather a good job of slicing off the top of one of his fingers with a mandolin. The pain threshhold being particularly enhanced by the fact that he was slicing very hot chillies! Ouch! However, he managed to knock the sliced chillies onto the floor, much to the (shortlived)delight of the semi circle of hopeful, doe-eyed, pooches!

I arrived back in the kitchen, summoned by the plaintiff wailing of my husband, who was bleeding profusely, and rather inconsiderately, all over my kitchen cabinets. Ignoring him completely, I immediately tended to the dogs, several of whom were writhing on the floor, clutching their throats with their front paws, and making omminous gagging and wheezing sounds! Having dealt with the dogs, mopped up the kitchen, and, of course, bandaged my beloved`s shortened digit, I was then severely traumatized myself when the slice of finger couldn`t be found anywhere, and we had to surmise that the dogs had, in fact, had that too!!! Made me feel quite queasy!(:o)

Or put another way, it was just a run of the mill Sunday afternoon in the Sears household! Never dull here!!!!(:o)

Air show tomorrow - up at 5 to beat queues. Sunday recovering and patching up ear drums.

Sting - you're a lucky bleeder. Enjoy

Oooh! Have fun Josh - I love Air shows! (:o)

Hope Sting packed his insect repellant - the disease bearing mozzies are back in force in New York! (:o)

I seem to recall from my local history reading when I lived in NYS, that tracts of the Bay which includes Manhattan Island were originally mosquito-ridden swamps - as indeed was the marshy area of Washington DC that now includes the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, near the Potomac River.
So, they've now come full circle, but the thought of Manhattan being infested with malaria-carrying mosquitoes in the heat & humidity of July/August isn't at all appealing.
Perhaps North Shields isn't so bad after all!

-- Anonymous, July 22, 2000

Apparently there were 7 deaths last summer in NY due to these little pests. The authorities thought they might die off in the winter cold (nice planning fellas - what was your contingency plan??). It is also carried by birds, so they now think that it might have spread as far sooth as Florida. Doesn't sound very nice - makes the brain swell, and tho I think a few of us on here could do with bigger brains, I think I could do withoot the side effects.

One of the great compensations of living in this country is that we don't have too many really scary insects. In fact, the thought of living in the same city as a cockroach makes me scream.

-- Anonymous, July 22, 2000

I'm sure I read somewhere that these Yankee mosquitoes originally bred in the small pools of stagnant water that collected inside abandoned car tyres during the hotter months.
I suppose the birds eat the mosquitoes and became infected. Scary stuff.
