I read in the review that the sony will fire even when the picture is not yet in focus. I was wondering if the focus will eventually come to a lock so I can move the camera to point it at something else while keeping the same focus position.

Except in preset focus (CU, svereal intermediate settings and infinity) and Panfocus, the S70 focuses continuously when it is turned on -- you can hear it searching for focus! In autofocus, it will lock the distance setting when you depress the shutter button half-way.

Yes, the 770 has focus lock, also has an auto exposure lock. Page 37 of the manual when you get it.
