Telephoto lenses for the Coolpix 990

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Im interested in buying a digital camera like the quality of the Nikon 990, but would also want more telephoto possibilities. I need to know if the 2X and 3X telephoto add-on lenses from Nikon are set at its maximum (mm equivalent) or if the optical zoom and digital zoom still works with it conected. E.G. with the 2X lens makin the optical zoom (76-230)mm equivalent.Thankyou

I have the 2x and the optical zoom does work (76-230). Don't know anything about the digital zoom as I never use it but it would seem logical that it would. As for the 3x it doesn't exist as of now. It hasn't reached the stores yet and doesn't have a Nikon part number according to my retailer.

Be aware, the 2x is a huge lens (multiplier) and completely covers up the viewfinder forcing you to use the monitor (which I almost never use). It looks weird on the camera because it's so big in diameter.

Just bought the 2X converter. It actually zooms from about 120mm to 230mm equivalent. Below 120mm you start seeing the circular edges of the lens at the corners. But the 2X lens converter setting on the CP990 stops you zooming back that far, and the camera goes to 115mm without the lens anyway - so no problems. And yes the digital zoom works perfectly well with the add on lens. It is bigish but I think looks fine and I find using the LCD screen OK.
