I'm going to assume your on a PC because of your email address. Serial ports are sometimes very difficult to deal with. On the PC side, some products work extremely well (but slowly) using serial and some never work at all. If your getting a successful connection to the computer then its just a matter of figuring out the Olympus software. On the other hand, if you cant get the computer to see the camera, go buy a $50-$70 Smart Media reader and spare yourself any more trouble. Lexar and Sandisk are two reputable brands which I recommend. CompUSA (shameless plug) carries both brands and your images will transfer FAR faster than the awful serial cable. Basically, your smart media card will be assigned a drive letter and you can drag and drop files from the card to your hard drive. No crappy software interface to deal with and no wires. Simple

Have a look at:

it's a serial port troubleshooting faq that I wrote for the Imaging Resource. You might also make sure you don't have any other routines running which may interfere with the serial port like the sync drivers for the palm pilot or other palmtop devices or organizers. If you do have one running you can temporarily disable it by hitting Ctrl-Alt-Del and selecting it and shutting it down, it'll restart when you reboot. Or you can permanently remove it from your startup folder and only run the routine when you need it -it probably has an associated menu item you can run it from.

The external card readers are a very viable option, and are much faster as stated by a previous poster. About 15 seconds to read 8MB, vs. 20 minutes for a serial port download. If you have a laptop a Smartmedia to PCMCIA adapter is a nice way to go. Very portable, about $35-40, and about as fast as the external card reader option or maybe a bit faster. You might find a better deal on Ebay.

Good Luck!
