About 30 Killed in New Nigerian Pipeline Blast Updated 3:45 PM ET July 16, 2000 WARRI, Nigeria (Reuters) - About 30 people were feared killed on Sunday in an oil pipeline explosion on the premises of a refinery in Nigeria's southern oil city of Warri, local officials said. The accident happened less than a week after more than 250 villagers died in a petroleum pipeline explosion at Ajede village about five miles from the site of the latest accident.

The Chairman of Warri South Local Government, Joseph Otumara, told Reuters that most of the dead were villagers living within the precincts of the refinery, operated by the state-run Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

"The exact cause of the explosion has not been established. We estimate that about 30 people died in the fire," Otumara said, adding that the blaze had been put out.

There was no indication of any damage to the refinery which has been shut for repairs for sometime. Since its closure the pipeline has been used to pump imported refined products to the refinery from vessels anchored in a jetty on the nearby Warri River.
