greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I am a pro who is moving from film over to digital. My queston for you all is, when shooting fine, normal, or basic which will give you the best finished tiff file. I know it's all in the compression format. do thay all open the same?? I love my D-1....

And the answer is....none of the above. Fine, normal and basic are all JPEGS which will have some quality loss because they are a compressed format. Fine has the least amount of compression (each image about 1.3 MB) when opened they are 7.5 MB files. But all three open to the same size (it's just a matter of how much they are compressed). More compression means more artifacts. Now here is the real answer- Use Neff (raw format). These are 4 MB files which you convert via software on your computer. This software lets you adjust picture quality parameters as you open the files. My favorite of these two programs right now is bibble. Here are two programs that will decode the NEF (RAW) files from the D- 1. The prices are $30.00 and $75.00. Both work quite well and have free limited time demos. Both programs are upgraded almost weekly and the upgrades are free. [ http://www.charm.net/~mchaney/imaging/index.html ] [ http://home.austin.rr.com/goce/bibble/ ]
