Oritron DVD100 VCD capability

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I own an Oritron DVD100 DVD player and I was wondering if anybody had successfully played VCD 2.0 or VCD 1.0 with more than one track on the discs. Everytime I put in a VCD 2.0 or a multi-tracked VCD 1.0 and my DVD player goes nuts.

P.S. I know it doesn't play CDR discs.

My wife gave me the DVD100 for Xmas, and the first thing I tried was a VCD. I had no luck, all it said was No Valid Disc. I had the same response when I tried a CDR music disc.

I was given a Oritron for Christmas. I have about 30 different DVD's and have had no problem with them playing. I bought my daughter the Disney Dinosaur DVD and everytime we get the message "No Valid Disk". We have tried three different DVD's of this movie and continue to get the same message. Has anyone else had the same problem?

-- Ray Patterson (raykptx@yahoo.com), February 04, 2001.

Yes! Both my neighbour and I have the same Oritron DVD player and neither will play the Dinosaur Movie. We noticed that the disk is a different colour (gold) than the other disks (which are silver). It is also a dual layer dvd. But as far as we can tell this peice of junk is supposed to play those as well. If anyone knows what the exact problem may be we would like to hear from you, otherwise I will be returning mine before the 90 day warranty expires.

-- Frank (villeneuve@canada.com), February 05, 2001.

I can't get it to play the Dinosaur DVD either. I put the disk in and it completely locks up the player. Every other DVD that I have tried to play works fine.

I am on my second Oritron DVD 100 because the first one went nuts when I tried playing "Shaft" on it. The video was 2 seconds behind the audio and I was getting green lines everywhere on the screen. On the new player, I rented "Bait", and at the beginning of the DVD the green lines again were present. They later went away. I am wondering if anyone has had this experience?

-- john holmes (holmespin@hotmail.com), February 07, 2001.

I cannot play Disney's Dinosaur either on my oritron dvd200. It locks up and I have to uplug it, plug it back in and press eject quickly to get the disc out. Has anyone flashed thier player to fix this problem? Oritron was supposedly comming with a fix for all of thier problems.

-- T Fox (vikesfox@yahoo.com), February 10, 2001.

I can't even get to the Oritron web site or find a phone number to call them.

-- Steve Scott (sscott@integramn.net), February 10, 2001.

I had the Dinosaur problem too. Mine wouldn't even power down or eject. I had to unplug and use the philips to open it up and pry the dang dvd out.

anyone out there have a problem with not being able to see the menu icons? I used to be able to press that button on the remote and access the menu at the top, but now I can't. What on earth??

-- Joe Marcelino (jmarcel1@san.rr.com), February 14, 2001.

My name is William We to have the same problem with Dinosaur Movie. There is a posable fix to the problem, We are still waiting for a new disk from Oritron that they clame will make there DVD 100 Play more complex disks. I should know in about 2 weeks if it works. Oritron is sending it and they said they will have it in about 3 weeks, and that was about 2 weeks ago. Also Disney them selfs have found problems with other DVD players. Disney seems to have made a bad DVD as far as being able to run on all DVD Players and there techs do not seem to know were there missteak lies. To get the disk that Oritron say will make there DVD player play more complex DVD's (ie Dinosaur. Cross our fingers) call Oritron at !-800- 726-3801

I want to stay anonymous. Go here and search for Oritron and read the comments. Try following steps.

TURN VCD CAPABILITIES ON:

menu: insert music cd, press stop, press menu, press #9, press1-all (repeat), press open a new menu comes on to turn on vcd player

I have had a similar problem with the Oritron DVD player not playing the Disney Dinosaur movie. It has played other dual layer DVDs with no problems. Anyone know of a resolution? I went to Oritron's web site at www.oritron.com and they do reference some kind of upgrade that is available.

Luckily I was able to find a website with diagrams clarifying instructions:

http://members.nbci.com/ldarchive/oritron_dvd/oritron_dvd- 100/oritron_dvd-100.htm

This should help immensely as these bloody converters may as well be written in ancient hebrew.

(I couldn't find my manual, and if you don't know what a button does these hacks just are a pain in the arse to figure out.)

Enjoy, make sure your vcd's are on CDRW media and all will go smooth.

I have verified this hack and it works for me.

I also have the oritron dvd100 which only plays region 2 and 4 but i really want it to play all region disks I would like to know if anybody knows how to do this

I suggest you contact Oritron's Customer Service Center and they will give you a S/W upgrade disc. It is free of charge. The new software can fix all of your Disney problem, VCD problem ... I try it. Very good.

-- Arthur (arthstep@hotmail.com), August 21, 2001.

I also have a DVD100 player and I get those green lines, I have to unplug my player every day to reset it to get it to work. It has been getting worse and worse. Now it seems like it wont even play all the way through one DVD. Does anyone have a fix or am I stuck with this junk? If you have some info you would like to share please send to ryanlada@hotmail.com Thanks, Ryan Lada

-- Ryan Lada (ryanlada@hotmail.com), September 13, 2001.

I've got one of these DVD's and the picture kept on skipping then the sound would be several seconds ahead. I took it back to Currys in the UK and the repair man tried to tell me that all DVD's do this....He was talking crap. I asked for it to be replaced, and the replacement had different software on it. It works fine now. On a different note, STOP BEING SO HARSH ABOUT THESE PLAYERS. They are cheap, and aren't loaded with loads of extras that you never use. Plus, region hacks are well easy to find on the internet. The nice man in Currys told me where to look.

Try this site the firmware 003 hacks also work with 005 I know I use :-)

I also can play VCD 1 & 2 with no problems once VCD is enabled

-- Trev H (trevvie@yahoo.com), November 08, 2001.

I have the Universal Oritron DVD Firmware Upgrade CD that upgrades to Firmware 005. This fixes several problems including the Dinosaur DVD problem. If anyone wnats me to send them a CD-Image of the Upgrade Disc, it's only about 2 MB, I could e-mail you the image file. Be sure to burn it onto a CD-RW though, otherwise the player won't read the disc.

OK....you guys , Thanks..!!!! I have just bought my DVD100 and came looking for a region crack ( which I found ) but while browsing this page I am having second thoughts about my purchase, I'll just have to try it and see. fingers crossed !!!n You get what you pay for I suppose ...and it was CHEAP

-- Shaun (sweir@sweir88.freeserve.co.uk), December 18, 2001.

I have had an Oritron DVD100 for a year and a half. It is a little slow to load, but other than that I have had no problems. I am thinking I might want to upgrade to firmware 005, but have not really had a need. I got the multiregion hack, and the vcd hack, and they work fine.

Does anyone have a reasonable explination on why cdr s don't work?

-- Bret Newbury (bnewbu81@hotmail.com), December 30, 2001.

Got mine last June. Ran great, was slow, had to hit buttons more then once sometimes. But then it died. Power light on, disc in tray. I had top open the case to get my disc out. And to this day, it will not respond at all. The poer light is always on, unless unplugged. But once you plug it back in, the light comes back on.

Goto Epinions.com for more reviews. Its a horrible little machine to lots of people.

I found all the answers that I need right here:

http://www.laserdiscarchive.co.uk/oritron_dvd/oritron_dvd- 100/oritron_dvd-100.htm

That address has the multi-region hack, and the VCD hack.

I am experiencing some problems playing back VCD's on it though:

Firstly: Sometimes it runs okay, sometimes not.. but when I run a VCD2.0 movie on a CD-RW I get the problem of the video freezing, then the audio freezing, then the thing 'freezes up' completely for a second and re-starts a sec. later playing fine. The kicker is that this doesn't happen at the same point every time. Anyone have any idea why?

I'm also having this problem playing SVCD's: When I put it in, the video mode must change or something because the picture begins to roll, and all color is gone. My only guess would be that it's trying to throw itself into another video mode, but I have no idea why.

For both VCD's and SVCD's I am using TMPEG 2.02.31.119 core 1.80.116 and Nero v5.5.2.4 to burn.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I have the same problem playing back VCDs. I think I am just going to wait till my unit dies and replace it with a cheap Apex AD 1500 (was $119 dollars canadian at wal-mart)

As for the firmware upgrade, anybody have this kicking around? (I'm hoping the firmware upgrade fixes the vcd issues)

-- Kuurgie (kuurgen@home.com), January 11, 2002.

If you go through the process mentioned earlier to turn on vcd, and use memorex cd-rw high speed, and use easy cdcreator 5.0, the vcd's will work fine. I tried other vcd creators, and had problems, but easy cd creator 5 platinum works every time.

I have own an Oritron dvd100 for about a year and have had problems with the sound and recently the unit has stopped playing in color. The dvd's play but I have no color. Anyone else experience this problem? Thx!

-- Tom Zwingman (tomz@mrsaginaw.com), January 23, 2002.

For those of you who can't get the disc out of the ORITRON dvd players after it is stuck...try powering off by pressing the power button on the player itself. Then hold the pause button on the player, not the remote, while turning it on. You should see something that looks like a "reset" screen or "password cleared" message when your player is on. Then it will say "no sic" or "wrong disc" message. Now you can press EJECT to remove your disc without having to open up the system with a screwdriver. I'm working on a way to bypass MACROVISION for all firmware version for ORITRON models DVD100 and up. I'm sure there is a way.

-- Viper Sniper (johnacardi@yahoo.com), February 25, 2002.

I tried the hack for ver 3 from laserdisc archive on my ver 5 firmware and I now have a multi-region vcd capable player which cost £90, so I'm well Amused as it was a present. If only someone could hack the upgrade software to let us play CD-R's I would be happy. The dealer door lock didn't work, that would have been handy to stop the rugrats opening it mid-movie....

I just talked to Oritron Customer Service and they flat out said the DVD100 "WILL NOT PLAY VCD'S OR CD-R, CD-RW. It was not designed to and there are no hack codes available that will work." Sorry to disappoint, this DVD player sucks and I am going to buy a new one!!!

-- bigdog (bigdog1972@att.net), July 01, 2002.

Um, ah, so do I , but you know what, I used a memorex CD-RW disc, and it read the vcd i had..problem is, the movie needs to be mpeg 1 and not mpeg2, and since mine was mpeg2, it didnt play it...but it will if the movie is mpeg1 !!! I also emailed customer service, and they said the player was never equiped for vcd's or mulit region playing, and that it is not capable of it. Um, got news for anyone who listened to that BS, it does play all region dvd's with the enabled feature, and it DOES play vcd's from cdrw's in mpeg1!!! Take that oritron! so many features you could have had!!

I own a Oritron DVD100 and have had only one problem so far. So far anyway. The problem is I cannot connect it straight to the TV. I can't even connect it through my VHS vcr. The only way I can get it to work is to connect it through a BETA vcr, which by chance I still have one. I used the A/V cables and hooked everything by the book and nothing happens. Does anyone have any ideas? I doubt everybody still owns a BETA vcr. But you never know. Thanks for any help, send an email to me.

-- Adam (aespry44@netscape.net), October 01, 2002.

Okay, for all those who need to know, region hack for the Oritron (most models): Press 'menu', then type 1 6 7 It will open a new menu to choose region, type 1-6 or press 'mute' to open all regions.

Any others you need to know or any problems feel free to email.

I have a DVD that plays on DVD 100 with no problem Firmware 003

but when I try to play it on DVD 600 Firmware 007 it gives me no valid disk. help.

-- Bryant Evans. (ghostfacefella@hotmail.com), November 04, 2002.

I think I have firmware version 005. Yes, the region hacks work, so does the VCD hack. And I can create a VCD on a CDRW disc, and that works. I do wish it would play MP3 discs, but that's probably too much to ask of a £59.00 DVD player! When I try to record a DVD onto VHS via SCART, the picture and sound distort when I press the record button. I have tried all combinations of hook up and there is no way. I have racked my brain until it hurts, but I just can't get it to work. The 2 very simple hacks I used are:

Region Hack (with no DVD in) ---------------------- MENU 1 6 7 MUTE (unlock all regions)

VCD Hack (music cd in) ---------------------- STOP MENU 1 INDEX OPEN

-- Guy Surtees (guy@surtees.net), November 05, 2002.

I'm having serious Oritron DVD100 problems. First, it gives me a hard time ejecting DVD's sometimes. Second, it gives me a hard time powering off sometimes. And third, just recently, it seem that it won't turn on anymore at all. The power LED's are on when its plugged in, but it doesn't respond when I try the power button on the remote or the unit itself.

Is there a way to fix this or should I just junk it?

Got a KOSS KD260-2 here, looks like Oritron DVD2117 on their web site... Got regional select to work but not VCD.

I have the KOSS KD260-2 as well. An insert was in the box that told me how to enable VCD.

"1. Insert an Audio CD and wait until it starts playing. 2. Press the STOP button and wait for the menu to appear. 3. On the numeric keypad of the Remote Control press the number 1, 5, 9 buttons in sequence. The VCD Enable Menu will appear. 4. Again on the Remote Control, press the number 1 button to enable the VCD function. Press OK button to confirm. 5. The KD260-2 will now accept and play Video CD's (VCD's)"

SVCD's don't work though. The other codes are: For all regions: Press menu-1-6-7 then pick 0 for all regions.

Firmware upgrading (I don't know what this will do when you select yes so be careful): Press code 760

Hey, I am having the same problem as Greg said (SVCD's not working), and I've tried everything.

Anyone find a fix yet?

-- Matt Myers (matt@nysus.com), December 25, 2002.

SVCD's seem to work on the KD260-2. You have to use the header trick. It is available here:

http://www.geocities.com/newestmoviesencode/dvdvcd

I tested it and it works. I haven't tested all the bitrates yet. I suspect that if you go too high the decoder won't be able to keep up.

Has anyone figured out how to get the DVD100 to respond. Mine sits there like it is frozen, the buttons don't work. It does show that it sees a remote, but wont respond to one.

-- cricket (cricket@tmlp.com), February 01, 2003.

My question is..How do you determine which firmware version you have? I'm going to assume mine is version 3 but i'm not sure..The Region crack did work for me though.

-- Brian (casull_454@hotmail.com), February 12, 2003.

Bought the KD260 from costco for 99$ cnd and it plays a lot of formats. VCD/SVCD/XSVCD at 4500kbps. Region hackable.

The only problem is that the player reports it's PAL/NTSC and when I put a region 2 dvd in it, it outputs in black and white. I which it would do signal conversion from PAL to NTSC. Switching the setting in the menu did not help. If anyone finds a way to do it let me know.

I have an Oritron DVD player, I have no idea what model it is. But most of the time when I put a DVD in it says "No Valid Disc", it is very frustrating. Sometimes if I switch the DVDs a couple times it'll work. Other times if I unplug it then power everything up again it'll work. But lately it hasn't been working especially on the DVDs I REALLY want to watch!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME!

-- Nicole (LvlyButterflyGrl@aol.com), March 13, 2003.

I have an Oritron DVD200 and was able to find the hacks for regions and VCD's. I was just wondering if theres a way for it to play PAL discs on an NTSC tv. The regions are all available to me, but some of the discs I have are from the UK, thus they're done in PAL.

Any suggestions?

I've got an Oritron DVD 100, and sometimes if you fast-forward a DVD, the video and audio don't quite match-up. The best way I've found to fix it is just pause it for a second then play it again - hasn't failed yet (so-far).

Has anyone successfully hacked the Region coding? Anything I've tried so far has just left me feeling like a gullible idiot!!! Likewise with the VCD hack.

A few people on this list have mentioned a problem with their Oritron DVD100 locking up and unresponsive. Well, I have seen a similar problem, and have a possible FIX! Today, I bought a dead DVD100 for $5. Plugged in, red LED by power switch and green LED under the tray are on solid. Pushing any button on front panel does nothing. Pressing any button on the remote causes another green LED to flash, but no other activity. Took off the lid and looked inside. Nothing obviously bad or burned. Connector from power supply board to main board has voltages marked for each pin. Checked with voltmeter and found that 3.3V line was way too low - about 1.9V. Traced circuitry back into the power supply, and found electrolytic capacitor C807 (right after the 3.3V rectifier) was HOT to the touch. Suspicious! Viewed signal on C807 + terminal with a scope, and it was obvious the cap was bad. I replaced it with the closest part I had (470uF, 25V), plugged the unit back in and PRESTO! it works! All buttons work, and it plays fine.

Anyway, this may be a design weakness in this circuit - the cap should probably be low-ESR, but maybe it isn't?

So, if you have a similar problem, and you know how to safely use a voltmeter on a live circuit, check the voltage on the 3.3V pin on the power supply connector, while it is plugged in and running. If you don't see close to 3.3V, you may have the same problem I had.

Good luck!

I also have the Koss KD-260-2 and would wish it did Pal conversion for NSTC television set... I can't help but feel that it SHOULD be able to do it. Here is why - if a unit had no pal compatibility, it would simply output NOTHING, however the KD does show a black and white picture.. I also have a Malata that did the exact same thing (the black and white flickering playback), but lo and behold there was a simple setting change to make and voila, it now plays back Pal discs on NSTC television flawlessly.

If anyone knows the trick for the Koss, do enlighten us...

-- daren (dmitton@canada.com), April 14, 2004.

Thanks to Walter T. That fix does work when your DVD100 is no longer responding with the power light on. It seems that those capacitors must be widely defective. Maybe someone in the factory was having a bad day?
