I'd loved to have heard the replies when he asked you if you'd done your homework..."yes Darling"

As another aside. Did anyone go to or have any stories/info on Firfield School, particularly in the 70's. It's undergone a few name changes, and was I think originally a merger between a grammar and comprehensive, when grammar schools disappeared. My grandfather taught there - in fact was eventually headmaster there. Sounds like a nightmare school now, but was it always so?. Never really asked my grandfather about it, but now that both him and my father have passed away it's a bit of a gap I wouldn't mind filling. Probably'll draw a resounding blank - most people here seem to be from either Heaton or the outskirts somewhere ;-)

Two of my brothers and lots of my mates went to Firfield in the late sixties/early seventies. It was a "secondary modern" school then. Memory is vague, as I never went there Windy, but we lived in Blakelaw then and it wasn't too long of a walk to the school. Me, I aparrently was smart and passed the old 11 plus and got sent off to St. Cuthberts on the West Road. They didn't like me and asked me to leave after four years, so I did.

Thanks Pete. Don't know why I'm so curious really - He'd retired to Corbridge by the time I started spending more time up there, so never knew that side of him I suppose. He was a stick-in-the mud, teetotal disciplinarian so I imagine he was highly popular ;-)

I've never had much to do with him but that's about what I've heard Windy, his son's a canny enough lad though. (what am I going on about?????)

-- Anonymous, July 14, 2000

yea..what are you going on about, TM? Are you taking the piss ;-))

certainly not, where do you think I get the handle Tynedale Man from? I used to be a member of Tynedale Sports club. (which includes the cricket)

So you knew him from his Corbridge days? I didn't give you much info to go on..he wasn't that infamous was he? George, his name was. I suppose most people knew/know each other in Corbridge.

Born and brought up in Corbridge. I knew a family of Darling's in Corbridge but the chairman of the name Darling I think is a different bloke, both a little odd I hasten to add but the Corbridge Darling of Glebelands ended up ok.
