XVCD and HVCD - miscommunication is among us!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

up until today i was under the impression that a XVCD was a vcd at regular rez, but a high bitrate.i got that impression from numerous posts i have read on this board.however, at this site - http://aussie01.freeservers.com XVCD is defined as a vcd with dvd rez and a high bitrate.and what i have thought was XVCD is actually a HVCD? i dont know how these standards came about, or if they are official standards, but i propose that for the sake of clear communication, the rez and bitrates used should be stated in posts instead of these terms (xvcd and hvcd)because obviously not everyone is on the same page.im not saying this because i think my definitions are correct, but because i have made posts stating that "brand/model A" can play a XVCD, when i meant as 352x240 at a 2500 video bitrate, but someone may take that as 704x480, which may not be true and i dont want anyone to make a purchase based on my false information.

Ndumu,

XVCD is 352x240 NTSC or 352x288 PAL with high video bitrate HVCD is 704x480(DVD/NTSC) or 704x576(DVD/PAL) with high video bitrate

This is what i used for my none-standard VCD....the reason is this:

XVCD = eXtended VCD which means VCD format with none-standard video/audio bitrates.

HVCD = High definition VCD which means VCD with modified frame size ( sharper details ) and video/audio bitrates.

These by all means are not what the MPEG Organization conformed to as standards! This is what users are modifying to suit their purposes. So take your pick as to what you wish to describe your products....If this confused you already...wait till the none-standard SVCD comes to be :)) I am working on that as we speak....
