Sir Alex Ferguson believes criticism of Phil Neville for his penalty blunder at Euro 2000 is unfair and part of the "national disease". The Manchester United manager claims the flak aimed at the defender in the aftermath of England's early exit has more to do with the fact that he plays for the Reds. Ferguson insists all his players are the victims of an anti-Manchester United agenda whenever they pull on the white shirt of England. He points to the hounding of David Beckham for his sending off at France 98 and the criticism of the selections of Phil and Gary Neville before Euro 2000 as proof of his argument. "The agenda with Phil and Gary is not an honest agenda. It is an anti-Manchester United agenda," said Ferguson. "Any Manchester United player who plays for England is going to get unfair criticism. Sadly it is part of the national disease. "Unfortunately for Phil and Gary they are copping it this time. Last time at the World Cup it was David Beckham. "However, both Gary and Phil have proved themselves time and time again. They have both got more league medals than any other player in the country and they will get more medals with this club in the future."

So I guess the flak Shearer got was because he almost played for MU? Why isn't Scholes being hounded off the pitch? And what does Phil Neville have on Ferguson that he keeps salivating over him? Enquiring minds want to know! ;-)))

SHUT UP, FERGIE

Claims That The Neville Brothers Were A Success At Euro 2000 Are Utter Nonsense

365 Opinion by Ian Cruise

LET'S get one thing straight before the e-mails start flooding in...

This is NOT a piece of anti-Manchester United propaganda. Nor is it written with any unnecessary bias against the men from Old Trafford. But no-one - not even those wearing the reddest of rose-tinted spectacles - could claim that Sir Alex Ferguson is talking anything other than nonsense with his latest claims.

The United overlord has told the Manchester Evening News that, far from being a liability at Euro 2000, Phil Neville in fact made just one mistake and was England's best player in the victory over Germany. He also insists that the criticism of the Neville brothers this summer was so intense simply because of an anti-Manchester agenda.

What utter bunkum!

It's entirely understandable that a manager should wish to defend his players wherever possible, and Fergie is a past master at that. But you cannot fool all of the people all of the time.

The simple facts of the matter are that both Neville brothers endured a tournament they would wish to forget in the Low Countries. It's not Phil's fault Kevin Keegan insists on picking him in the side, but if Ferguson is so taken with him why does he regularly select 35-year- old Irishman Denis Irwin instead?

And as for Gary, his star has fallen so far in the past couple of years that he has gone from being talked of as a future England captain to being only a fringe player in the eyes of many supporters and pundits.

Ferguson has bred the 'us against the world' mentality at Old Trafford for years and it has served his purpose superbly. It has helped his players gel into arguably the best club side in Europe and their achievements in the past few years have been rightly, if sometimes grudgingly, applauded. But is it any wonder that they are universally unloved when the manager continues to spout such complete garbage?

With outpourings such as these he does neither himself nor his players any favours. He doesn't care, obviously, but it still makes him look foolish in the eyes of the neutrals.

He goes on in the article to say that both players have proved themselves, that they have more league medals than any other player in the country and will get more medals with the club in the future.

I'm sure they will, but that's not the point. The point is Sir Alex Ferguson actually seems to believe they were successes at Euro 2000.

And on that point, I think the nation has already delivered its verdict.

Oh my. Could it be that certain members of the media are beginning to see what has annoyed so many people for so long?

Also on Sprouting Life tonight was a piece on George Best bashing England's Euro2000 performance. He argues that the only time England do well is when ManU players get the ball. For example, he mentions such English greats as Irwin, Giggs, Stam, and Keane.

Silly season in full swing!! ;-)

Will we have a go at Neville if he plays us? Of course we will, not because we all blame him alone for England's lack of progress (although we do of course) but because he is playing for the opposition. If they're against the Toon we have a right to put them off their game and wind them up. It's all about finding the nerve to touch such as with... Beckham...thick blerk, thick wife etc. etc. etc Wise...Taxi beater Graham Rix...peodophile Keane....Irish nutter who can snap at anything.

Reviews

I laughed all the way to the Carpathians, it was most enjoyable playing against Phil - Dan Petrescu

My favourite moment was when Phil allowed me to build up play down his side and put the ball in my favourite leg to score. - Figo

I didn't need to play, but the shows were excellent. I particularly liked Phil breaking down the left , getting to the byline and realising he couldn't cross with his left. - Hagi

My one regret was not being able to play against Heskey. My ageing replacement Geoghio Paraplegico thoroughly enjoyed marking him - Popescu

I scored and I was only crossing the ball - Chivu

Your midfielders are very funny - Munteanu

It was nice to play against Gary and Phil because when you attack although you can't predict everything they're going to do you at least know it won't involve defending - Ilie
