Tell the piss taking paellas to come back when they've got a serious offer.

I bet Bobby could tell them in their own language as well.

It's quite possible that it was the Toon who suggested a swap deal with Deportivo. However, BR's no fool and seems to rate Helder at ca #1mm, so it seems highly unlikely that any deal will be done without at least #3mm + Helder coming our way.
Anything less and we've been 'done', IMO.

Funny one this- all the money complication but Helders the one that looks the class act.

I dunno spud - while few on here have anytime for him I actually think there's a decent player lurking in the shape of Marcelhino.
Why he hasn't produced it I don't really know, but he did have a lot of injury problems, the constant changing in defensive personnel couldn't help him settle in a new league/country.
There were occasional signs that he could be an accomplished defender with the ability to play the ball out of defence, but I have to admit that at times he just didn't look up to the PL physically.
Certainly Helder settled in to the PL much better.

Hopefully if anyone has taken any notice of Euro 2000 the football will change in the Prem. Teams, hopefully including ours will not pass to feet but to space.

Defenders like Helder and Marcellino will be more used to this sort of thing having played on the continent and could probably make Howey look pretty average if the game changes in this direction.

Defenders mistakes are highlighted perhaps more than any other position. Most of the Gullit purchases have the pre-requisites of pace, physical presence and ability on the ball. But lack of concentration/application/communication/confidence - whatever it may have been, has let them all down on more than one occasion. But I agree, Clarky. I feel there's a good defender lurking behing Marcelino (and Goma). A new season, a fresh start and who knows.

"make Howey look pretty average" thought he was anyway back end of last season. He was at fault of several occasions, just hope its temporary.

Watching thru recorded Sky matches/highlights+the official season video, occasionally u see a defender make a complete arse of something- you look closer, unsure who it is.....more often than not its Marcellino. Of course Dabs makes errors but you forget about them when u see the other good things he does. Must be said though that Spanish people ive spoken to say hes excellent.

BTW anyone whos seen the new official video.....makes u realize just how useful Speed is, dosent it! Loads of goals.

Personally I'd do it in a second. Yes I know that we'd lose out on the deal. But to me Helder posses one quality that neither Dabizas, Goma or young Hughes has, and that is, that Helder is a defensive general. He organises the players around him and keeps them in line. Howey posses this quality too, unfortunately he has lacked the quality of being able to play lately.

REPORT - HELDER AND MARCELINO SWAP

Newcastle could seek to do a swap deal with Deportivo La Coruna which will see popular Portuguese defender Helder sign a permanent deal and Marcelino move the other way, according to a report in tonight's Newcastle Evening Chronicle. Newcastle have been trying to sign Helder since he impressed on loan last year, but they value him way below the #4m asking price. Helder suffered several injuries last season and Newcastle are unwilling to pay more than #1m for the centre-half.

On the other hand, Marcelino had a disappointing season last year aftert his #6m move from Real Mallorca and the Spanish club are unlikely to want to pay cash on top of furnishing Newcastle with Helder.

(So NUFC may the ones leading this proposed deal.)

In one way I'd only like to see one of these two players at SJP this season. I'm dreaming that the young Caldwells/Beharall can make inroads into the 1st team this year, which would show the rest of the Premiership that we have a youth policy and it is producing.
