What was the Embarcadero or waterfront in SanFrancisco like before 1989?

The Embarcadero was a physical mixture of seaport related industries and produce houses. The produce industries that are now in the Bayshore area were removed there in the 1960s to make room for the Five Embarcadero Buildings, the GateWay Commons and the Mariner Plaza buildings.

The Embarcadero was also the center for the vast Ferry system that existed before the Bridges. The Key Line Trolley system that connected Oakland to San Francisco once the Oakland Bridge was completed termoindated at the Ferry Building.

San Francisco's Muni System connected with the Keys system at the Ferry Building. San Francisco's first subway was also in the Embarcadero. It was an underground tunnel for automobiles etc. in front of the Ferry Building.

Good Luck with your research.
