Nikon D1-which file type gives best quality?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I purchased a D1 today and await an IBM Microdrive to store the images, in the meantime I am familiarizing myself with the unit. I note in the Nikon manual that a 96 meg CF card will store approximately 23 RAW images at 4MB's each or 12 RGB TIFF's at 7.8MB's each. I have read somewhere that the RAW format gives the best quality, but how can this be if the RGB TIFF file size is almost double? I don't want to buy the Nikon capture software for the RAW images if the RGB TIFF images look better when I print them out, not to mention the extra shots that I can get onto the Microdrive. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks.

Rather than trying to repeat what someone else has explained very well in the past, I'll refer you to that explanation. http://www.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp? forum=1014&message=119335&query=tiff

The http shown above doesn't work unless you take out the space between "asp?" and the next word "forum". There should be no spaces in it at all. But thanks for the info Steve, it is an interesting site I wasn't aware.

Here are two programs that will decode the NEF (RAW) files from the D- 1. The prices are $30.00 and $75.00. Both work quite well and have free limited time demos. Both programs are upgraded almost weekly and the upgrades are free.

I hate this software that reformats text in our messages. I'll try again. [ http://www.charm.net/~mchaney/imaging/index.html ] [ http://home.austin.rr.com/goce/bibble/ ]
