is Pete Sampras? Surely the best ever tennis player and a wonderful, dignified bloke, too. Quite horny too.

Was really really impressed by Venus william and her rhetoric , really nice down to earth girl , and her sister is a goddess , mind at 6' plus i wouldnt fancy me chances in the sack much , but a pleasing thought nonetheless : 0 )

Got to agree dougal.
I've never really been a great fan of Pete Sampras, but he ground down a wonderful dogged opponent yesterday, and handled it all so beautifully, so full of class.
A giant of a sportsman and a true Champion.

Actually, the lads in my office claim that the real stunner would be Serena with Venus's body.... Anyway, Clarly - your assessment is bang on: Sampras is a champion and a sportsman of incredible merit. Shame Wimbledon seems to be losing its lustre. Possibly it's a function of even the women's game being so "two shots per rally maximum" but I can't ever remember seeing empty seats at Wimbledon. Ironically, this is the first year I haven't gor tickets through the public ballot.

Sampras is one of the greats but McEnroe is the finest player of all time in my opinion. He's certainly the best I've ever seen and many very good judges of the game, including the late Fred Perry, agree with me. Sampras has the records but for sheer genius, John Patrick is the man.

Oh and please everyone; a posting of "You cannot be serious." would be very predictable.

Dougal,

You actually started a separate tennis thread after the real Pete Sampras was kind enough to come on here and start his own Wimbledon thread?

And what's with this horny stuff? What have you heard?

Actually, Mr. Sampras apologizes to madame Dougal. It seems he was too busy celebrating his victory with his blonde companion to have noticed the thread sequence. Non-footy! almost everything is non-footy for another month!

As has been said earlier, that Pete Sampras is a real gent. He even had the dignity to appologise to our very own Dougal. Sheer class. And Sampras isn't bad either.

BTW - my missus reckons Sampras is no good, arrogant and doesn't deserve his championships. Well, that's just another area that we differ.

As great as McEnroe was, I could never forgive him for the poor sportsmanship. I was always a Borg (and then Becker) fan. Agassi in terms of sheer talent - he is the only one of recdent players to win all 4 grand slams - takes a bit of beating, but lacks Borg's and Sampras' icy demanour and application.

Turtyly agree Beardo , great player but no charisma , few bob mind o whats to say its the right or wrong way , but Wimbledon loves a character . Great to see the girls doing the doubles yesterday .. when im in America on 21/07 im going to ask Serena out , she is too nice for words and 18 too .. ah why is life so unfair ? : - ))

I enjoyed Venus' win in the singles and her unbridled joy at winning. Her humble background made it all the more impressive. Undoubtedly, she is a wonderful athlete.

However, you know I really didn't enjoy the Williams win in the doubles. In comparison to the diminutive grace and femininity - and no little talent and determination - on the other side of the net, the Williams' sisters looked like Mike Tyson and Frank Bruno, and simply bludgeoned the other ladies to defeat. No contest, and rather unedifying somehow.
