I remember that in a past episode some character mentioned Carter's middle name and I remember thinking that it sounded kind of like an uppity name but I can't remember it. I think it was from an early season, maybe the first. I know they said his dad's name was Roman or something like that because Malik looked it up in that book when he found out how rich his dad was.

I think his sister's name is Barbara because in "Obstruction of Justice" his cousin Chase says something about his family history and mentions Barbara.

Yeah, in today's TNT rerun of Obstruction of Justice, Chase was saying how their grandfather disapproved of Carter's career choice and he said it was the same with his (Chase's) photography and somebody else's summer stock theatre. (I don't remember the other name.) He also mentioned a Barbara, but I got the impression that Chase could have been talking about Carter's siblings or maybe it was his other cousins.

Usually, if a guy is a number 3 in the family name, he was named after his dad & grandfather. But if Carter's dad's name was Roland, I guess he wasn't named after his dad. Maybe it was a great- grandfather.

Carter's full name is not John Truman Carter, III. He is not the third. Anna only called him that when she learned he came from a rich family. She was just joking. His father's name is Roland, so it is impossible (I think) for him to be a third. I think this is right, over at the Warner Brothers ER Message Board we discussed this exact topic a couple of weeks ago, and this is the conclusion we came to.

You can be a III even if your father has a different second name, I think. In Carter's case, he was named after his grandfather who was the IInd. Joseph Kennedy II is named after his late father's late brother (Joseph), his uncle in other words. You have to distinguish the people if the generations are close enough and uncle/nephew, grandfather/grandson are.

Diana, in the episode Thy Will Be Done Carter introduced his grandfather to Abby as "Jonathan Truman Carter Sr." if his grandfather is Sr. and he is the III how can his father's name be Roland? And in response to the original question, his middle name is Truman.

Wow, not this again. I know this has been discussed before, but I don't remember where. Regardless of Carter's grandfather's name, his father's name IS Roland. I just watched the episode in syndication where this is mentioned (sorry, didn't note the ep title). It's the ep where Benton keeps getting phone messages regarding his student loan payments, and then the staff finds out that Carter is from a VERY wealthy family. Jerry and Malik look up some list of millionaires in a magazine, and they clearly say that his dad's name is Roland. So if Carter is John Truman Carter III, either an uncle or great uncle or some other relative must be JTC II. Or else the writers just messed up! :-)

this is confusing. i am confused. i always though carter was john truman carter III. he does introduce his grandfather to abby (in that S7 ep when they go to the charity ball) as john truman carter sr. that would make his father john truman carter II or else john truman carter jr. this is consistent with nbc media village and spoilers releases that describe carter as "being with his father *JACK*." however, i really thought from more continuous seasons past that his father's name was roland.
