memory sticks?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I am considering purchasing the Sony dscs70 camera. I will be using it for closeup shots of artwork, sculpture, etc. to print out and put online. It sounds like it takes great pictures. I'm worried about the memory sticks, though. Are these good? How do you transfer the shots to the pc? Thanks, Karen

Don't worry Karen, Memory sticks are a fine way of storing your images. Not to much more expensive then Compact Flash or SmartMedia and the downloading speed to the PC (assuming the DSC-S70 has USB) is very fast indeed. I myself own the Sony DSC-F505V and I've got no complaints about the memory sticks at all.

I have found Memory sticks to be cheaper than the other alternatives, if a slower medium. With my 233 laptop, it takes 4--5 minutes to download an entire 64 meg memory stick....that is with the PCMCIA adapter.....probably the fastest method of downloading available. USB is however quite acceptable, and if I didn't have the laptop, would quite possibly be the way I would go. On the internet, the files are much too big for your use......9 meg files at the max resolution, I would think you could get by with a much less expensive camera in this day and age.

I use Memory Stick on my 500Mhz PowerBook G3 and it is an excellent medium, although you should be careful to never eject one before the computer has finished saving to it.
