Last night during an interview, Marian Salzman 'futurologist' from New York informed the nation that "there's no hairdryer that's been manufactured yet that's going to survive the Y2K issue .. because there's smartchips in hairdryers as well and they weren't programmed properly"

That comment is going to make my Y2K awareness work all that more difficult as I am likely to be put in the same category as this misguided visitor to our shores.

Where would a supposedly informed 'futurologist' get such an idea? If she can predict that we are all going to have wallpaper that will change colour/pattern at the whim of our emotions, how does she think technology can survive beyond 2000 where, it seems, every appliance is doomed?

Do you mean that wallpaper isn't supposed to change colours and patterns with emotional whims ? I usually try to see flowers and vines with butterflies..and just a couple of lizards to keep them under control..

Charles,

Don't be silly. The fact that hairdryers (and washing machines) will not survive the rollover has to be true because it was given by an expert Y2K consultant. I believe this person is an "embedded chip" expert.

I think the expedient thing to do is contact the company of any devise that harbors a chip and demand proof that their products do not have some hidden date/time function that will cause us undue hardship after the rollover.

Itis our right to demand that they have an available representitive on hand at all time to answer each and every query the public has over the Y2K status of their products, along with a website that lists each and every product with the remediation done and the result of a year long testing program by an outside consultant! Not that I will believe any of the government spin that they crank out after they meet my demands, after all they want to make money from me today and aren't worried about how their products do tomorrow.I have the right to demand these services and any other I can think of because the future of my family is at stake.
