Enlargers w/o filter drawers

greenspun.com : LUSENET : B&W Photo - Printing & Finishing : One Thread

I've been looking (mostly on eBay) for an inexpensive 4x5 enlarger. Some of the older, and thus less expensive ones, lack a filter drawer for variable contrast paper. The variable contrast filters I have are 3"x3" so sandwiching them with the negative won't work. I've look for larger filters but haven't found any.

Is there another work around I could use?

And while I'm at it, do you use variable contrast or graded paper?

Thanks,

Chris.

Ilford makes a swell set that hang under your lens. It has a little monter and everything. You'd have to see if it would fit a big lens though.

Kodak makes an under lens filter kit as well. You will have to be more careful about dust with any device under the lens, other than that the under lens filters work as well as the gelatins over the lens. BTW I use Variable Contrast Paper for reasons of economy.

BTW both Kodak and Ilford make 6"x6" filter sets. I picked up a set of Ilford on eBay.

Thanks folks! I thought there must be something like this but I didn't really know.
