Maric to return

United outcast Silvio Maric has vowed to return to Tyneside - but only to demand that Bobby Robson grants him a free transfer. The Croatian midfielder went AWOL ahead of United's end-of-season tour to the Caribbean in mid-May.

Instead, Maric flew to his homeland and his agent has since been touting him around Europe, insisting he is available on a free tansfer. Robson is equally keen to see a player he regards with contempt move on. But Newcastle are demanding a fee of at least #1.25 million for a player who cost them #3.65 million just 15 months ago.

And Maric will fly back to Tyneside early next week to tell Robson that such a policy is preventing him from securing a move to Italy. Maric has been training with former Croatia team-mate Robert Prosinecki over the last few weeks in a bid to prove his fitness to potential suitors. Turkish giants Fenerbahce have already approached United regarding Maric but backed off when told he was not available for free. But Maric insists: "I am working very hard with Prosinecki every day and I'm going to Newcastle on Monday to get a final decision from them."

"I want to go to Italy but the coach of Fenerbahce is very keen on me. But I don't want to go to Turkey."

Wouldn't you just love to be a fly on the wall when this useless, lazy b@st@rd "demands" a free transfer from BR?
He reckons that the Club's demands are hindering his moves to find another Club. Presumably, he reckons his performances since he came here have nothing whatsover to do with it.
This tosser needs sorting, big time!

Could maybe, possibly, perhaps..be why no one in Italy seems terribly keen on him? Just a thought. Maybe Bobby should bring him over the States and sell him off to the Washington Redskins as a tackling dummy. NFL preseason should be starting up about that time. Kill 2 birds with one stone...we get some money and get rid, and Silvia gets sorted. ;-)

Hmmmm - confirmation that Ronnie Gill's Sunday bedmate:

Silvio Maric is considering buying out his Newcastle contract in order to clinch a move back to Croatia.

THE Magpie misfit will arrive on Tyneside this week to face the wrath of United boss Bobby Robson after going AWOL ahead of the club's tour of the Caribbean in May.

AND while Maric now concedes that as things stand Robson will not release him on a free transfer, he will plead to be allowed to buy out part or all of his contract.

THERE has been talk of interest in Maric from Italy and Turkey, with Fenerbahce scared off when they discovered he was not available for free.

BUT Maric's preferred destination is the club he left for United - cash-strapped Dinamo Zagreb.

IT remains to be seen whether Newcastle will cut their losses on a player who cost #3.65 million just 17 months ago.

BUT the prospect of removing his estimated #25,000-a-week salary from the wage bill should appeal to Robson, who long ago lost patience with the moody midfielder.

Perhaps the gods are thinking about us after all. IMHO, this would be the best resolution we might expect. He's got 2 years left on his contract. That's a tad over #2.5M if the SS figures are correct. That's an awful lot of money to have tied up in salary for somebody who clearly has no future at NUFC. At least he'd go up in my estimation if he was prepared to shell out himself. But of course he won't - he'll either stay or some other club will make it look like he bought out his contract.

Come on lads - he didn't deliver but everytime I saw him play he was trying - even in the Reserves - more than some of the layabouts we've had in the past.

He showed against us that he could play - it just ain't worked out at the Toon.

Give him a break - why the hell should he go on the tour when he obviously had no future. He only went about not going the wrong way.

Howay then Josh. What's your solution to the problem? And divvent say "42".

-- Anonymous, July 09, 2000

#25000/week is a lot of dosh to us. I reckon we take whatever we can get but get him off the payroll asap.

Its down to YBR and some delicate negotiation - let the agents earn their dosh.

Sorry Josh but I've got mo sympathy for this particular bloke whatsover, and I don't agree that he has ever tried hard for us. Put 22 working-class lads on a patch of grass, and they will run around enthusiastically, partiicipate, and try to win the game.
By all accounts this moody, if talented tw@t is a bad influence in the dressing room, a poor trainer, doesn't mix even though the players have gone out of their way to help him to fit in, has shown no interest in playing his way back into the first team in the Reserves. We made him a millionaire, and he has repayed us by sticking two fingers up at us.
He is a thoroughly bad apple in the camp, a total utter waste of money not, to say space. If it wasn't for the #3.5mm transfer fee and the #25k a week we've been paying him to sit on his lazy @rse week after week, I'd just love to see the Toon tear up his contract and say "sue us".
The sooner this toe-rag jets out of Newcastle for the last time, the happier I - for one - will be.
Tosser!

Not one of your favourite players then Clarky, eh? Actually, removing the vitriol, I agree 100%!

Screacher,
The "vitriol" is carefully kept under lock & key in the bathroom cabinet, reserved purely for those who deserve it.

-- Anonymous, July 09, 2000

.....along with the Syrup of Figs and Imac, eh? Neither to be taken by mouth.

-- Anonymous, July 09, 2000

I certainly would not like to take an Imac by mouth, although Mrs gus would say I would be more than able to!!
