The "History of Middleboro" Letter

greenspun.com : LUSENET : New England Motocross Racing : One Thread

Last night I received a letter from the Capeway Rovers explaining the history of the track(i,e. how the track has improved over the years) It also went on to explain why, from their point of view, why the experts were banned. Some of the ammo given to them came from comments and threats made on this website. The letter was for the most part done in a professional manner and got their point across. A large portion of the comments on this website are helping to dig a big hole for the people who are trying to solve the issues at hand in a professional way. Don't get me wrong, I want the riders to be respected and listened to as much as anyone and I have read the well written letters from the riders but... IF I didn't know the real story and read Middleboro's letter and then came to this website to find out how the riders felt I would view the riders as the bad guys. Don't be fooled into thinking that nobody from Middleboro is reading this stuff and saving all the juicy crap to use against us. Mike #125

Here ya go.. I just got it... Please forgive the typo's.. I scanned it in and not of it worked very well....

T,HE mSTORY OF <.;APEW'AY' ROVERS Capeway Rovers began jn 1934 in Bourne, Massachusetts. Capeway Rovers moved to Middleboro in 1951 and Incorporated. The original track was behind Chase Chevrolet and was taken over by Eminent Domain. We then moved to our current site on Plymouth Street in Middleboro. Since Norman Collins has been a member of the Capeway Rovers. we have run over 800 races. When we started in 1934 we had rocks, dust, and mud and we still do. Hey Folks! It's called MotoCross. Over the past sjx years, Capeway Rovers has actively listened to the rider's and their mothers' requests for improvements to the track. I. Indoor bathrooms were requested, so we built a ~ujlding with indoor bathrooms. Now tfiis wris-iiof300iicem-heldby an:-TIieexp'effr! derSTiiivetofd us that they don't care about this; they can go behind a tree. I'm sure their mothers, wives, girlfriends, etc have no problem using our new indoor bathroom faciLities, though. 2. The expert riders told Capeway Rovers they wanted more money. Consequently, we gave them more money. 3. The experts wanted more riding time. We gave them more riding time. The problem is they Ca11't do what they asked for a11d were given. The experts can't do 20 minutes pJus 2 Japs. 4. ltiders want,ed to have signups on Saturday nights. Capeway Rovers gave them signups on Saturday nights. 5. Jack wanted better burgers. Not only did we get better burgers, we got Black Angus burgers. On Riders' r\ppreciation Day in 1999, Cape, way Rovers ga\'e everyone a gate pass for two instead ofhandgrips. This was a decision, which we made and which cost our group over $8,000.00. Now that is rider appreciat, ion. Over the past six years, all monies collected have either gone into the track or back to the riders. For the past five ye~rs,the Capeway Ro:vers members-have received only $30.00 to work for a sixteen-hour day. They receive less tl1an even the flaggers are getting. [fl 1999, Capeway Rovers returned over $98,000.00 to the riders in the form of cash payments, trophies, gate passes, Championship Points Fund, Tom Timonen Fund and Hole Shot Awal.ds. fu 2000, Capeway Rovers win return over $1] 5,000.00 to the riders in the form of cash payments, trophies, gate passes. Championship Points 'Fund, Tom Timonen Fund. Hole Shot, Awards, and the $34,000.00 Capeway Rovel"S Championship. The rider.s reps requesred that the $5.00 entry increase go back to the riders al1d we agree-d. We set up the $34,.000.00 Capeway Rovers Championship which includes experts, amateurs and no\'ices,

Due to the seriousness of the threats made to rider's, their fan1ilies, employees and members of Capeway .Rovers, 39 riders have had their right to enter Capeway Rover p,ropeJ1y suspended for the remainder of the yeal" 2000. Failure to adhere to this niling will result in their being arrested and prosecuted. The promoter at any track is responsible for the well being of all partjcipants. Many of the 39 riders suspended were threatenjng fellow riders and thejr families., as wen as our employees and members. I know because I was threatened. My name is Norman Collins. Based solely upon the threats they made" these riders could have been arrested and prosecuted. Capeway Rovers would like to express their sympathy to the people who got caught up in this. Those who went along with it because of the threats. Remember, if a car with five people in it drives up to a bank and one person gets out and robs that bank. All five people are going to be arrested and considered robbers not just the one who went into the bank. I am sure you can understand why Capeway Rove1.s has made this ruliltg and wj1) uphold it at all future events. Capeway Rovers feels very strongly that we will not allow anyone .threatening anyone else on our property and/or at events l"lm by us. We will maintain control over our property .Capeway Ro,'ers spends over $2] ,000 .00 fi)f police officers for the 13 events I,~...e run, to assure the safet.y and wel.1 bejng of our patrons. The seriousness of the threats has cause-d Capeway Rov"ers to make this ruling. This ruling has nothing to do with N.E.S.C. This ruling was made to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for those who want to pal1icipate in events run at our track. Whether or not you are an expert. You will all agree that every business is entitled to a return on its in\'es:tment. C.apeway Rovers has a $2 million investment in .this track and yet thejr members are paid only $30.00 for a sixteen-hour day. Does this sound fair to you?? We have done this in order to be able to have the improvements and prjzes available tor the riders and their falnily and friends. We deserve to be treated with respect not with threats. .Riders seem to feel Moto-Cross js a necessity fur us and so we will do nothing to prevent them from racing at our track" Well Capeway Rovers can do quite well without these races. The expelis and others who want to receive the "'big" money. need to go to .New York. There they wiJJ find velvet straight-awa.ys and no rocks, mud or dust.. They also pay hundreds of dollars for a tenth p]ace finish and it. on] y costs $10.00 to ent.er. In the past 42 years, Capeway Rovers has seen dozens of tracks disappear into the sunset. Yet, Capeway Rovers continues to make improvements. If Jiders want more money, they can go and run the National Cjrcui1.. I don't th.ink they will find they fare very well there. Very few of the .N,E.S.C. experts are National caliber or they would be riding there. If Tony Lorusso had taillights on his bike, after the second lap at Bull Run, that's ail you would have seen; him putting on his brakes.

ffCapewayRovers paid the kind ofmoney thatN;E.S.C. experts think they are worth; ., they wouldn'igetIt81J}'Way. Alot more Tony Lorusso'swouldsbow up at Capeway Ro\'ers and some of today' sexperts w01;1ldbeoutoftl1emoney . Capeway Rovers was started so that a bunch ofpeople could get together and have a good time. We havei;riedto continue thjsandtobelptbe experts along the way. We have not received the proper thanks for ouretforts. In fact, the Capeway Rovers MotoCross Track is the satest MotoCross track in New England. We are promoting a sport that involves a large group ofyou~gpeople. a11d their families, The youth should not be subjected to this type ofbel1aviofor they will emulate it. After aU, if the person you 1ook upt.o acts ae.ertain ~.ay, jsn't that the way }'OU are going to act too. This behavior cannot be forgiven with a slap ontbe wriStOT it win continue, and we will be -!~~di~,gihe wrong}~~o o~~-~qer' ~~~their fu~iRes~o con1e to have a good time. Some of the 391iders who have been banned are being b~d forever, They will be banned forever because of their efforts to sabotage the track. They endangered the riders, thejr friends, tamjJjes, and employees and members of Capeway Rovers. J:n fact, anyone who felt that they were wrong was ~ ta-rget. Riders were toJd.ifthey continued to race, they would have a target on their baCks and would be taken out. These threatening statements a1'e extremely unspoltsmanlike and should never ha\'e been n)ade. Norman Collins would lik.e t.o see some of these ..;marshmallow" expert.s tell a Jojo Ke1ler, a Jim Meenan or a Jimmie EJJjs that they are going to be taken out. The person mal..~ng the threat would probably be the one making the trip to the hospital. N.E,S.C. What a JOKE ! if Cape Way Rovers cared about the riders, It would be run BY the riders ! not Norman and Buzzard ! and I find it hard to beleave the they only get paid 30 dollars for 16 hours work ! thats a $1.88 and hour ! gimmy a break. and were does this Norman collins the clown come off calling the Experts names. this is what was in his letter !". Norman Collins would like to see some of these marshmallow experts tell a Jojo Ke1ler, a Jim Meenan or a Jimmie EJJjs that they are going to be taken out." this looks like a treat to me ! from norman ! I personally would like to find out, Is Norman the LAND owner were Crapy way Rovers is located ? If he is not ! lets get his ass out of the president seat ! or put him in charge of cleaning his fance new toilets ! Maybe Jack could take over running the track !

i think he ment, "For the past five years, the Capeway Rovers members have received only $30.00 and all the beer they can drink to work for a sixteen-hour day."
