Basic source of information for digital camera novice

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Although I have been using and programming for computers since 1963, recent advances have blown me away. I am becoming interested in digital cameras and am thinking about a Fuji MX-1200 as a starter. I've looked up various questions in the Dicussion Forums and, although the answers are detailed and thorough, they seem to presuppose a level of knowledge and terminology that I lack.

I don't understand terms like: smartmedia and flashcards, USB card readers and PCMCIA adapter cards, etc. What are these things, what do they do, how does one use them? They are obviously important to my choice of camera and how I can maximize its capabilities.

Where can I go to learn about these things and get an understanding of how they affect my use of digital cameras?
