Power Failure Puts Residents in Dark 07/06/00 From Staff Reports

An underground cable coming out of a Huntsville Utilities' substation on Old Monrovia Road failed Wednesday night, creating an arc of flame and knocking out power for a couple of hours for about 700 customers in northwest Huntsville.

"When an electrical cable fails, it puts out an arc, it will throw up a flame," said utilities' spokesman Bill Yell. "It can knock off a manhole cover. We're dealing with very high voltages.
