Flower (tigerlily?)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Nature Photography Image Critique : One Thread

Taken on velvia with an EOS 620 and 75-300 (non IS) @ ~250-300. Exposure not recorded.
No flash as it was an overcast day and there was nothing really close to intrude into the background.

What do you guys think?

I like the centered text. Howdja get the totally black background? Looks almost like a studio shot. Very nice.

This appears to be exquisitely sharp from front to back, no easy feat at 250-300mm! Exposure looks spot-on. I, too, am curious as to how you got such a uniformly black background, especially if it was overcast day -- almost looks like softbox flash was used against a black background. I think I would probably crop off the black sides; it seems to me that this would come off nicely as a square image.

Very nice work; please share the details!

Thanks.

I was very happy this came out so well...I think I used aperture priority at somewhere around 16-22, obviously on a tripod with velvia...

There was no flash used at all...The flower was pretty much by itself, in the fullest light at that point (again, it was overcast), and the closest object in the background was the forest, I think, which was some 30-40 yards away, so everything was blown out, even with the small aperture (this was at about 5 feet from the lens, the closest focussing distance). I think I focussed on the pistils - is that what they're called? - which were closer to the front of the flower. The rear of the flower is somewhat out of focus, as is the very front, but I was rather surprised with how wide the dof turned out.

Here are some other pictures from the same trip as this one.

Thanks for the comments.

Jeremy

That's a photo of day lily I believe. Daylilies are easily hybridized and there are 1000's of varieties. Your photo has the strong diagonal composition, with all of the petals showing, that keeps my attention, The color is very saturated and delicious and I focus on the white line leading into the flower. Thanks for showing us your
