Sony S70 vs. 505(v)...Round#2 HELP!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Thank you! to all the responders to my recent query as to the merits of the Sony S70 vs. 505v. 3 days ago after much research and a lot of time on these digital photography web sites, I purchased the S70 digital camera. Initial impressions have been.... LOVE the color and sharpness. Ease of use and intuitive menu and controls have been great for even less experienced members of my family. The images have almost all been shockingly vivid and sharp! BUT... today I went to a 4th of July street festival, and found that in any light condition other than shade the flexibility the S70 offers in terms of shutter and aperture priority modes etc. might as well not exist, as they are accessed through a pretty much unreadable highly reflective LCD. My question then is for all you 505/505v fans out there... Please give me some feedback as to the LCD on your cameras use in varying light conditions. I am considering returning my S70 and "getting in line" for a 505v. After today's dissappointment however, the thought of "no viewfinder at all" seems scary. Thanks for reading this long winded posting and in advance for you much appreciated replies Curt

Curt I think you will find the same thing with the 505V. Here is a solution you may, or may not like. This is a link to a device that covers the LCD with a sunshield.

Take a look at this and see if it will work for you.

After many considerations i decided for the 505v, haven't regretted it. In bright sunlight you can turn of the backlight en the lcd is perfectly usable then. The swivel lens is a great advantage too, you can alwaus turn it in a position where the lcd is perfectly readable. Only problem is medium light conditions outside, sometimes difficult to choose between backlight on or off. Own the camera about 4 weeks now and have not missed the optic viewfinder.

Hope this helps, Rob (The Netherlands)
