Does anyone know whether the holes in the seat unit(next to the rear light when viewed from behind) serve any purpose, as it seems a perfect place to re-site the turn signals to.

My best guess is that the ports on the rear are there to provide cooling for the underseat exhaust, and seat itself.

Here in the United Kingdom there is a specialist that trades your old seat unit for a new one with indicators in then holes at the rear of the seat will post this on when i find the article.
