homeschooling article

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Our local newspaper had an interesting article about homeschooling in Indiana. It is titled, "Homeschooling does not threaten public education". For those of you interested you can read this article on line at: http://www.kpcnews.com/display/inn_sunday/News/noble5.txt

The article does not come up directly at the address given. Just go to the home page archives and type in homeschooling. Good read. Our 2 oldest "graduated" this year. We have only our "Baby", 13 left. We didn't register them when we moved to our current location 6 years ago. I was not aware that we had to. Oh well. I'm still not likely to. It is encouraging to hear that Dr. Reed has a partner type attitude. It wasn't always like that. Indiana always has been better than a lot of(most) states about home schooling. I still get a little parinoid w/ the "I'm from the government and I'm here to help you" routine. How many do you school? How long?

The author's use of the term "disarming" in describing the seeming team effort mentality of her state's department of education speaks volumes. (Whether or not intentional) The premise that the state has the authority to "grant" the responsibility of education to parents through means of any sort of registration is antithetical to the concept of a free populace. Like the Siren's song of Homer's Odyssey, we homeschooling sailors better be sure to keep an eye on the conditions under which we sail rather than the enchanting wail of government mermaids. To blindly thank the government for "allowing" us to homeschool is to barrel headlong onto the jagged reef of granting government more authority that it has a right to claim. We wil sink for sure!
