Sony S70 vs. F505v...???

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I am an advanced amateur photographer and will be making my first digital camera purchase shortly. I could use some help in terms of my reasoning and choice here. With the rapidly changing digital camera field more reasonably priced SLR digitals are almost sure to be coming, somewhat eclipsing my interest in the 505v. The reviews, professional and user, have been very favorable for the Sony S70. This would seem to be a great interim camera purchase, probably more easily used by my wife and other family members. With the price difference I could buy a 64mgb memory stick and reader. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

My thirteen year old son regularly uses the Sony S70 and he had only previously used a point and shoot camera. The quality of the lens gives great results of the closeup photography that I like to do. I choose it over the Nikon 950 because of the sharper comparison photos shown on the imaging resource web site and the camera has matched that quality in my use tests.

Since you are an advanced amateur you may appreciate the more traditional photographic metaphor of the S70 with it's eyepiece. Both cameras are very nice - the 505 has a longer zoom to consider. I think IR gave the S70 higher marks for picture quality though.

I just received the new F505V last monday. I'm very happy with the performance so far. My biggest concern was the lack of eye piece viewer. The camera falls perfectly to hand with holding the camera and lens in the left hand and using the right hand for functions and clikking. Think of it as a digital large format camera and looking down into the LCD becomes natural. With little time with the camera so far, but I think it's a keeper.
