Anyone heard any more about that Portugese Midfielder?

Alan Mahon from Tranmere Rovers is available on a free apparently. Left Midfielder, promising talent. FREE?!

Reports today link us with Clark, the Keeper of Bradford City in a cash plus Hamilton deal. Hints of Given to Celtic, but Bobby needs 3 keepers and Karly /Perez will be the ones to go.

And the top class european striker we have all been waitibg for according to the Ronnie for #8m is that hotshot Belgian....Mpenza

Southampton are trying to sign Jordi Cruyf who is available on a free. Surprisingly, he is only 26. I wonder if he might be worth taking a chance on given our lack of a left-sided player and much dosh?
The Saints have also signed ex Man City striker, Uwe Rosler, also on a FT.

Clarky,

Cruyyf available on a free looks a decent deal. He can play up front as well and was a Dutch International before NH got hold of him.

However, wasn't he at Barcelona when Robson took over from Johann Cruyyf. Would that mean that Bobby sold him to NH and therefore doesn't rate him even when he was an International?

If we could get him on a two year contract maximum it might be worth a look.

Just because a manager sells a player doesn't necessarily mean he doesn't rate him.

Circumstances, right place wrong time, and other issues and obligation also come into play.

I would like to see him come to us, especially on a free and from under the noses of NH......

......and it has the added incentive of adding yet another real Jordi to the squad!

Todays Journal reports that Everton - faced with losing their entire m/f - are planning to offer the Toon #6mm for Gary Speed!
However, they reckon GS is untouchable and the Toon will turn them down. Hhmmm.

-- Anonymous, July 12, 2000

Can't see that happening unless we already have somebody lined up. The Evertonians wouldn't want him back either by all accounts.

His departure was discussed a while back on here with various opinions but 6 million was never mentioned as a possible figure and I would doubt that Everton would pay that much.

De Builder,
#6mm may just be "Journal b/s" and I agree with you that it is unlikely Everton would pay #6mm for a 30 year-old. However, they seem to be in fairly desperate straights for m/f players, and the question is - if they WERE to offer that much would we, indeed should we, accept it?
The Journal is adamant the Toon would turn it down, but my instinct is that it would be a difficult decision, and I'm less than certain what the outcome would be.

-- Anonymous, July 12, 2000

I would turn it down definitely....he's definitely one of our star performers even if we the crowd don't always realise it!

-- Anonymous, July 12, 2000

For the avoidance of doubt Gav, I would also turn it down as I also believe GS is one of our most influential players. It would cost us more than #6mm to adequately replace him, and as Everton are finding, players of his standing are like rocking horse droppings right now.
However, you and I aren't making the decision ......

-- Anonymous, July 12, 2000

You're both right IMHO. As you say 6mill is a lot of money buit could we adequately replace him with that money.

We could replace him with someone like Tre's Mullins from Palace but he's untried in the Prem and would still cost something like 3-4 mill. Speed's experience in the Prem is a valuable asset, not to mention his goals. He'll get better with age and his game has never been based on pace (I nearly said Speed!!) so his goals will still come.

At the minute we could do with a bit of stabilisation in the squad apart from getting rid of dross, so keep Speed, Ferguson and Domi and the current stars will start the season in familiar circumstances not wondering where to make the run or where the new guy is going to run etc etc.

From Football265

IPSWICH - NO DEAL FOR GLASS Ipswich Town Chairman David Sheepshanks has said that they have no interest in signing Newcastle's Scottish international defender Stephen Glass. He had been heavily linked with a #1m move to Suffolk but Sheepshanks has said that he has not on their list of targets.

From the Ronnie

Meanwhile, Ipswich Town are weighing up a #1 million-plus bid for United winger Stephen Glass. Manager George Burley is keen to strengthen the Suffolk club's squad in readiness for their Premiership campaign.

So who (if any) do we believe? I'd like to see the lad stay.

At least the Ronnie gets his position correct!

-- Anonymous, July 12, 2000

It would be good to see him get his head down in pre-season and impress Bobby enough to get a starting role.

-- Anonymous, July 12, 2000

Just heard on Metro that he has come off the transfer list. Yes, we are so bored in the office that we have the radio on!

-- Anonymous, July 12, 2000

You can just see Bobby sitting at his desk and George Burley phones him about transfer listed Glass and Bobby stirring in his chair thinking he had taken him off the list ages ago.

trouble is who did he get him mixed up with!! Alan Shearer on transfer list shocker..

Fiorentina reckon they turned down a mystery 50million quid bid for Toldo.....damn it! I knew YBR was saving his pension money up for something ;))

-- Anonymous, July 12, 2000

Celtic are in for Alan Thompson from Villa for #2.5mm.

-- Anonymous, July 13, 2000

Celtic are going for the Geordie Double Act, Jonno and Tommo, BTW saw training photo recently and the ex-Toon goalkeeping coach was hovering, for the life of me cannot remember his name, help.

Buff,

John Burridge or another one?

-- Anonymous, July 13, 2000

Pilgrim, You unblocked the cells - Terry Gennoa, am I right?

-- Anonymous, July 13, 2000

Spot on Buff - Terry Gennoe (ex Blackburn)

That font of all knowledge - the Sunday Sun - today has Liverpool and Villa interested in Steve Howey at #2mm, and feel BR will be tempted to cash in. They feel Villa are favourites as they could offer him better first team opportunities. 'Pool are apparently looking at SH as a back-up to Hyppia and Henchoz.
They also reckon Everton are contemplating an offer of #5mm for Nobby Solana - presumably the Speed for Everton stories are now old hat (as well as b/s).

They also have Mr Heed in for Fulham's Chris Coleman for #2mm if/when his #5mm bid for Ugo Ehiogu (inevitably) fails. They also reckon Liverpool - apparently determined to make enemies of every single PL Club - are now about to launch a #5mm bid for the Smoggies Christian Zeige, despite Ziege insisting he is happy where he is (Hhmmm!).

Also just read that Charlton are in for Charvet and Robinson at 1 million each, with Charvet already a done deal.

-- Anonymous, July 16, 2000

IMO #2mm for these two is pretty good business, although Paul Robinson could very well come back and shaft us at some point. I can't see him making it at the Toon, and he'll be better off trying his luck elsewhere. Good luck to the lad, hope he makes it.
