Compared to what?

It's a decent comsumer zoom, i.e. you won't do better for the money. It's not as good as an "L" series lens, but it's MUCH less expensive. It's not as good as a 50/1.4 prime, but it's more useful for most people.

I have one and use it a lot for "general" photography.

28-105 usm is a good walk around lens. very practical zoom range. it is a consumer lens, with a consumer price tag. but it is a very good consumer lens. can't compare with the 28-70 2.8L, but not as expensive.

IMO it is a good first lens. something else to consider is the 24-85 3.5-4.5 usm. i sometimes would like to have the extra range at the wide end rather at the tele end.
