Story Filed: Wednesday, June 28, 2000 11:03 AM EST

TOKYO (June 28) XINHUA - A Japanese military transport plane was confirmed Wednesday evening to have crashed in the Sea of Japan, and five crew members aboard the plane are feared dead, the Kyodo News Service reported.

Japanese rescue workers determined that an oil slick and debris they collected from an area where the plane was believed to have gone down was from the C-1 transport plane belonging to Japan's Air Self-Defense Force (ASDF), the report said.

The plane left the ASDF's Miho base in Tottori Prefecture in southwestern Japan for a 90-minute test flight at 2:07 p.m. (local time), but disappeared from radar at around 2:35 p.m., when it was flying over the Sea of Japan about 110 kilometers north of the base.

The C-1 plane, measuring 29 meters long and 31 meters wide, is made in Japan.
