Hundreds of homes and businesses across Walsall were blacked out yesterday by a fault in an underground high voltage cable.

A total of 1,800 consumers in the Aldridge, Streetly and Walsall areas were hit by the blackout at around 6.45am.

A spokesman for GPU Power UK said that the fault was traced to a cable in Streetly and engineers managed to restore supplies to 880 customers by 7.40am.

A further 850 were back on line by 8.50am and the remaining homes and businesses affected had their power restored shortly after 9am.
