Return of the non-footy controversy (with apologies)

Fave city apart from Newcastle and why it's your fave. Can be anywhere in the world. I would say Barcelona - beautiful city with a great history and the most wonderful dialect/language (not unlike tha Toon as it happens). Also had a fantastic time there. You lot?

Toronto; has the best aspects of the US and UK and none of the drawbacks of same. Not crowded, good eating and drinking. Overall just a friendly, beautiful city, and the views from the lake towards the city are just breath taking. I have the photo enlargement on my office wall.

Worst city: Makemland is a city now, isn't it? Nuf said.

This one will be controversial, mind: Istanbul.

Sits back and waits for protests...

Oops, so worried about the xenophobic reaction I forgot to say why.

Beautiful in a gone-to-seed faded splendours sort of way. Superb cuisine - you can forget anything else in the Mediterranean as far as I'm concerned, it's just a pale imitation of Turkish food. History: I'm looking out the window at Durham Cathedral as I write, but the corresponding building in Istanbul was getting on for a millennium old when they started Durham Cathedral. And, sorry folks, lovely friendly helpful people (if a tad over-eager to try to sell you things) - provided you don't set fire to their flag of course.

No controversy here Dr Bill. Istanbul for me too. Beautiful city and some of the friendliest and warmest people I have ever come across. (Mind, I wasn't watching a football match when I was there.)

I don't really have favourites. I can even say something nice about Stoke on Trent (just, people are very friendly but the city in all its towns is disgusting ). I have fondness though for Munich, Perth and most definitely Cape Town, which was magical, but I would have to say Sydney as I'm gonna spend a year there shortly and spend two and a half ten years ago. Worsed city, everywhere has something about it that's good (No I don't Know Birmingham) Welsh valleys were pretty hostile on all fronts though.

Cape Town. Lived there for 9 years and it's impossible to not fall in love with that mountain. Lived on the back slopes, and you just get used to half the sky being filled with this enormous piece of rock carpeted with forsests. Where beech trees have fallen they catch the sun and look like streams. Nothing more beautiful than that sight after a downpour when the sun comes out. Rain washed, clear air with all the dust removed. Simply glorious. I could have stayed there forever without some of the people. Just realised how much I miss it, sniffle blub sob.

Geneva, the people are friendly. The city is spacious with some great places to visit (if you have enough money - it's expensive). Finally, the backdrop of the Alps with Mt Blanc in the distance over the lake is truly awesome.

yer sound like an estate agent Si??? ;-))

Favourite cities - Melbourne/Perth. Melbourne for the restaraunts and cafe life. Perth for the laid back life style. Worst- Manchester/Swansea Manchester not because of the obvious just because it's so bloody depressing. Swansea- The lowlite of my 6mth stay in Wales.

City I'd most like to visit has to be Prague.

-- Anonymous, June 28, 2000

Rome - fantastic city, great history, brilliant architecture, great atmosphere. Also always memorable as the place I got engaged last May (by the Trevi Fountain when there were no American or German tourists spoiling the moment).

-- Anonymous, June 28, 2000

Best has to be Vancouver. House facing the pacific, clean, friendly downtown area with restaurants/cafes on every corner. West-coast Canadians relaxed and friendly and genuinely appreciative of the beauty of the place they live in. Oh and you can ski after work in the winter too.

Worst is Sheffield. It's f*cking grim.

-- Anonymous, June 28, 2000

Scratchy, was there no statuesque blonde bird in evening garb and some seedy bloke with a rollup cavorting in the fountain, then?

-- Anonymous, June 28, 2000

Snap Dunx! I`d go for Sheffield as my worst.

Best - SanFransisco!!! Loved it!!!(:o)

Cheers TM, I'll have to get myself a mobile phone, pony tail and Range Rover now.

Worst place I've been? Probably Easington for the sheer miserableness of the place.

Fave city has to be Savannah, Georgia. read Midnight in the garden of good and evil, to find a worthwhile vision worst has to be Miami, oppressive, hot and dangerous.

-- Anonymous, June 28, 2000

Favorite City- Almost anywhere along lake como/lugano. Those italians really know La Dolce Vita.

Least fave City- Dallas, TX. I'm sorry, it's too ******* hot down there. At least in Miami you can cool off somewhere and there are hot cuban girls to look at.

Softie, I was in Cape Town last week, still magnificent + ridiculously cheap; now that it's over 10 rand to the pound, e.g. a beer for ~ 40p. and the wine!!!

I've become a big fan of both Sydney and Perth and, as I've lived / worked in so many famous cities I couldn't name a favourite - I believe "people make places".

-- Anonymous, June 28, 2000

anyone noticed that the UK has no favourite cities? Sheffield might be grim but it's got a cracking night life (unlike Stoke but I have fond memories of that place). There are lots of really lovely places in the UK, outside Newcastle that is. London itself is not too bad....

-- Anonymous, June 28, 2000

Agreed TM,

I always enjoy London if I'm not there for footy reasons. I also love Amsterdam. Maybe it's something about capital cities that makes them seem so exciting. Mind I quite like Manchester for a night out.

-- Anonymous, June 28, 2000

Best - Amsterdam - friendliest and liveliest place I've been

Worst - (excluding Mackem land which is an insult to the word City) probably Birmingham

-- Anonymous, June 28, 2000

Bit of a loaded question as it pretty much rules out the whole of SE Asia which I love but whose cities aren't exactly pearls. The question was cities though - I obviously love Sydney, but high commendations go to Hong Kong, the 'Dam, Chicago, Berlin, Boston and Athens(!). Agree with other people's sentiments re. Istanbul. Disagree with those dissing Stoke Sheffield & Birmingham, all of which have (or had) cracking nightlife.

But favourite has to be Prague. That place would bring out the romantic in a German traffic warden.

Least favourite is Vienna. Long story, but involves a train journey, some urine and an apple.
