Newcastle land 'new' Ginola

Newcastle have signed striker Daniel Cordone from Racing Club of Buenos Aires for #500,000 for next season, with an option for two more years.

The 25-year-old is said to have the skills of David Ginola - but is a more prolific scorer.

Cordone, who joins fellow Argentinian, midfielder Christian Bassedas at the club, is due to arrive in London today and then travels to the North East for a medical.

What I'd like to know is who said that Cordone had the skills of Ginola. To me it is probably not some one from South America as I do not know if they would really know who Ginola is or would more likely compare skills to another South American.

And from TeamTalk:

Robson in Cort battle

Bobby Robson and David O'Leary are reportedly battling it out for the signature of Wimbledon's star youngster Carl Cort.

As TEAMtalk revealed last week, Robson is desperate to sign a new striker to partner Alan Shearer following doubts over Duncan Ferguson's ability to avoid injury.

Robson has turned his attention to Cort after missing out on Portugese ace Joao Pinto, who is expected to sign for Fiorentina after Euro 2000.

Despite being favourites to sign the England under-21 international, the Magpies face stiff competition from Leeds United who are hoping to team Cort with Australian striker Mark Viduka in their bid to take the Premiership crown to Yorkshire for the first time.

Cort has made no secret of the fact that he wishes to remain in the Premiership and said: "My agent has told me that there is interest from Leeds and two other clubs. I don't mind moving from London, the offers are flattering."

Cort would cost between #6m and #7m which should deter other interested clubs, Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City.

Reports suggest that Leeds boss O'Leary is also prepared to outbid Robson for Juventus' #6 million rated Yugoslav defender Zoran Mirkovic.

Who the hell is this Zoran Mirkovic fellow and when were we linked to him previously?

Brazilian ace eyed

Bobby Robson has been linked with another Brazilian, this time midfielder Paolo Caesar.

Robson is reportedly ready to pay #1.5million for the Vasco de Gama star after missing out on Malaga striker and fellow countryman Catanha.

If a deal is made it would follow the signing of another South American star, Argentine international Christian Bassedas. (And obviously Cordone as well).

Hmmm, 1 Brazilian, 2 Argentinians, 1 Peruvian and 1 Paraguayan. NUFC will soon be able to enter a team in the Copa del Liberatores soon. ;-)

Tre, if Cordone has "the skills of Ginola", won't he be needed at the Sydney Olympics, by the Argentine diving team? ;-)
