Eyman files initiatives to limit taxes, fund roads

Friday, July 7, 2000

By LAWRENCE M. CRUZ THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

OLYMPIA -- Tim Eyman, the man behind tax-slashing Initiative 695, filed two more initiatives yesterday to limit property taxes and channel more money into roads.

Eyman said 264,100 signatures were gathered for I-745, including one from GOP gubernatorial contender John Carlson. The initiative would require that 90 percent of transportation money go to roads, instead of mass transit.

He said 262,900 signatures were gathered for I-722, which would repeal taxes and fees approved after I-695 qualified and would limit property tax increases to 2 percent per year.

"This assures that both initiatives will be on the ballot this fall," Eyman said.

He said the initiatives kept up the momentum created by I-695, which has since been ruled unconstitutional by a lower court and is pending before the state Supreme Court.

The Legislature stepped in to preserve the initiative's provision cutting car license tabs to a flat $30.

Eyman said his latest initiatives are "a chance for (voters) to say, 'We have no buyer's remorse,' for 695."

Several other initiatives are expected to be filed by today's deadline, among them:

I-717, Property Taxes, which would reduce the 2001 property tax by 15 percent and limit increases to the inflation rate.

I-728, School Construction, which would redirect some state funds to pay for school construction.

I-729, Charter Schools, which would allow some districts to sponsor charter schools.
