British Hacker Arrested for Sabotage of UAE Network

The 26-year-old Briton, stands accused of hacking into the state-run Etisalat system tarnishing the record of the UAE's only Internet Service Provider. June 21, 2000, 02:44 PM

DUBAI (AFP Arabic) - A young Briton has been arrested for hacking into and sabotaging the Internet network in the United Arab Emirates, newspapers reported, as the system crashed again on Wednesday. The 26-year-old Briton, named as Lee Ashour Syed, stands accused of hacking into the state-run Etisalat system and causing havoc to one of its two servers, tarnishing the record of the UAE's only Internet Service Provider (ISP).

The man works as a computer programmer for one of the top information technology companies in Dubai, which has ambitions to lead the IT race in the Middle East, papers said.

The British consulate in Dubai said it could neither confirm nor deny that a British citizen had been arrested since "no national has made contact to ask for consular help".

Dubai's police chief, General Dahi Khalfan, said the accused man was being interrogated by a specialised technical police team before being referred to court.
