Acer Scanwit 2720S (Filmscanner) : qualityproblems with negative films !!!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Hello there, I need answers to one big problem with my filmscanner. I tried every options, but couldn't reduce the picturenoise when scanning negative films. The diapositives and black/white films are scanned with a good quality. Just the colournegatives have picturenoise, which I just can reduce at 30% with pictureprogrammes (Photoshop, PictureIt, ..etc.). I updated the drivers but can't get a better result. Does anyone could help me ? Thanks in advance, Yves

I've never had any problems with noise scanning negatives on my 2720s. What speed negative film are you getting problems with? Are you sure it's not aliasing between the film grain and the digital pixels? You might try reducing the resolution in that case.

The only time I've had problems with scanning negatives is when the subject contrast has been very low, giving flat negatives. This has happened to me maybe one negative in 500. Check out my review page, and you'll see the sort of results I'm getting from negatives. It's Here

I have a similar problem with Umax PL270 (it is the same product as Acer Scanwit). The negatives after inverting and profiling show strong lines and noise in green and blue channel mostly on one side of the scan. It is almost impossible to get a good scan if a sky is in the faulty area.

The similar problem occures also in the same place of the darkest parts of the slides - but is much weaker and almost invisible (since it is in the darkest shadows).

The problem is biggest when using ICM profiles generated for negatives (though they product excellent results in term of gradation and color). When using so called "negative profiles" embedded in Mirascan the problem is minor but the results are bad (flat faces, false colors) so I think many peoples can have no knowledge about this fault.

The problem is also more acceptable when using low-sensitivity films (their characteristics is more steep when examined in linear space - CCD elements are roughly linear)

I have contacted the service - they said it usuall for this type of cheap (=not good) filmscanner. But I will try to force them to repair it when I finish scanning of my slides.
