so you don't have a bicycle?

How about one of those scooter things? (you only have to use one leg). And then Lee Iacoca(sp) has a company that sells motorized bicycles.

SF is not exactly a bicycle-friendly city (all those humongous hills, you know), and even if it were, all that knee-bending would be excruciating.

As for scooters, I dunno...they remind me of those motorized carts old people use.

Where we live in Brooklyn we're a mile up a really big hill (into the aptly named Brooklyn Heights) from the nearest grocery, and two miles from the really good Middle Eastern groceries on Atlantic Avenue. Then I discovered the magic of DELIVERY.
A big strong young guy with a road-ready cart on wheels (kind of looks like a Good Humour ice-cream cart) pushes the groceries down and even carries the bags up the stairs (if the freight elevator's closed) to my apartment. If you know exactly what you want, you can even call or fax in your order and they'll deliver it!
Of course, there was the day last month when the delivery boy (here two weeks from the Ivory Coast) and I were trapped in the freight elevator in the dark for half an hour............

At http://zapworld.com/catalog/ you'll find electric bikes and electric scooters. I use one of the patrol bikes for special events, so I know the hills won't be a problem. It only slows down a bit. Iacoca's E-bike looks better. Ford (the auto company) will be selling a similar bike soon.
