Red-eye and crystal or white eye

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

With my Nikon 990 Digital Camera I use the red-eye reduction but then I notice that the pupils will not have a red-eye but a white eye, as if the the reflection of the iris was white. I call it the shining eye syndrome. What gives how can I fix this?

I've not been able to eliminate redeye or white eye all the time, sometimes yes, but not always. So, I bought the Nikon aluminum "outrigger," for lack of a better name for it (about $50), attached my SB-26 flash to it, hooked the cord to the 990, and presto, perfect flash pictures! Not always the most convenient thing to carry around, but it sure solves the redeye problem (plus the SB-26 "throws" the flash waaay out there when needed. I adjust the flash intensity either on the camera via the Menu option (truly a NEAT feature), or on the SB-26 itself.

Since the flash unit of Nikon 990 sits next to the lens, it's the perfect formular for red eyes and can be fixed using the "flash bracket" either from Nikon or several after market with either Nikon flash or other dedicated flash (much cheaper than Nikon) like Ted said or use photo editing softwares, some of which come free when you order photo CD. Also you can get a red eyes correction pen from your local photo shop for a few bucks.

A white-eye reflex can be an indication of retinoblastoma, a cancer of the retina.
