So who on here has been involved in "football violence"?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

A lot of discussion today on this subject so let's see who on here has experienced this at first hand.... and their reaction to it.

I've seen terrible things in the 70's and 80's. I've been at games where "riots" started. My reaction? .... walk away

I've never got "caught up" in any of this because I walk away.

I have little sympathy for the "fans" who are "innocently" caught up in the trouble surrounding football because I KNOW you can turn around and walk away.

I've been in pubs in extremely dodgy areas alone (W. Ham/Millwall away) wearing colours and being taunted by locals.... ends up with us having a bevvy together and good banter... yes there's usually one who would take your head off but just ignore them!

q: So what do I do that others don't?

ans: I don't look for a fight

So there you have it. In the eyes of people like LR/Gav I'll be branded a coward but I actually enjoy getting on well with folk whoever they are, whatever nationality and whatever football religion they follow.

I'm more than capable of defending myself but have never needed to.

I haven't actually called you or ANYONE a coward for having an opinion or a different way of doing things to me have I?!?!? NO and I wouldn't....everyone is entitled to do things their way....

My way is not to ignore these people....am I therefore a THUG?

OK - confession time. I once hit a ManUre "fan" with my umbrella whn he and his nice mates chased me down Matt Busby way. Being an athletic (?) youth of 17 at the time (so only a couple of years ago, eh) I then legged it away from them and let the trouble pass. But I guess this doesn't count as football violence - more like cruelty to animals!

But sometimes it's not that easy to walk away. I remember going to the 5th round cup match with Newton Heath (1990?), you know the one we lost 3-2 and fat Mickey Quinn shoved Leighton out of the way. I was walking from the station up the narrow road on the way to St James' and we saw some 'spotters' at the top. Who quickly pissed off. About 30 seconds later, a group of Newcastle fans ran straight passed us into a group of Man U fans and promptly kicked the shit.
well at least that's what it looked like from our view point as we we're legging it out the way. These Man U fans were neither looking for trouble nor expecting it. I'm sure there have been countless worse stories of football violence but, like I said at the start, it's not always possible to walk away.

Ok I confess, I once broke the plastic base off one of my brothers Spurs Subbuteo players. Oh yes, and I was also guilty once of throwing peanuts at a policeman standing at the front of the Leazes End, then wetting myself while he tried to locate the culprit each time.

I occasionally accidentally thump Jonno or Screacher (my normal match day companions) when I get excited or frightened at a game but I haven't been picked up on CCTV yet or been hauled off by a steward. Presumably it's only a matter of time before the law catches up with the Dougal Despair Firm.

Half-Time, NEWCASTLE -V- Man City, the 60`s, SJP, Gallowgate Urinals. Caught two Mags beating up young City Fan, had to restrain them !!! They met up with their crew and ambushed me back of Clayton Street, when confronted with numbers I always focus on one face for future reference. Got the guy 6 months later in the Gallowgate Fairs Cup, drank with the Huns in the Chancellors before the "Broon Ale Match", well the Lion and Lamb was full!!, no problem, Jimmy Scott scored, problem, bottle ower my heed. Not a bad record and you did ask

heehee Buff. Not a bad record at all for a man of your...ahem... vintage. And I never realised they had 'crews' in the 60s. ;-}

As for me Geordie, I'm pleading the Fifth Amendment on this one for reasons I mentioned on the Kicked Out thread. Not cos of anything outrageously ugly - though I've definitely done some stuff I'm far from proud of - but cos I think it's inevitable we do some daft stuff when we're kids and when the hormones are raging. Problem arises with nobheeds who are still getting off on the violence well into their late 20s/30s etc.

Naa Gav, your not a thug. I was just getting some debate going and recalled you saying you would react to people goading/shouting at you. Fair does if someone physically attacks you that's a good reason to whack 'em back. Words, taunts, singing nasty songs is not.

My point being that 9 times out of 10 you CAN walk away. You don't have to get involved.

Geordie.....one of my most horrific moments at a game was an away game in the 80's...up at a place called Newcastle. After the game I made my way back to my car, parked on a main road along the length of a park (opposite a brewery I think). Before reaching my motor I saw two reds being chased by a MOB of Geordies. One of them was caught and pummled. Now...this WAS football violence.....I could have walked away like you suggest, but I couldn't have looked at myself in the mirror again if I had.

Sorry I got a bit uppity there Geordie....I quite like you and thought you were having a go at me :))

I know you can walk away but for me it's a personal choice not to....it's so difficult to describe why I feel like I have to do it that way....I just do....

I don't initiate trouble (well if I do get cocky then I will back down!) but if someone wants to have a pop at me then fair enough...

No offence meant Gav. I'll remember not to have a pop at you or say the wrong thing within your earshot ;-))

hahahaha :))

For the record...I'm with Loony Toon on this one....I've seen far too much to go into and it's not stuff I'm proud of either...

Worst I saw was when my 12 year old cousin was put through a service station window by a bunch of either Chelsea fans after we were travelling back from an away game at Rotherham...hmmm...maybe that's only the worst cos it was personal....I've seen some nasty shit and some of it not that long ago....pretty bad incident before the charity shield when waiting in a pub near Kings Cross for friends to turn up....a gang of the bad lads were playing "knock the black guy out".....basically the chosen "lad" had to knock a chosen innocent black guy out with one punch...if he didn't then all the rest would jump in and help out...it was pretty sick...
