Positive press thread

The media have churned out so much negative and anti-Shearer stuff so let's have some positive stuff on here to cheer people up!

From the Journal:

KEVIN Keegan last night called on England to rally behind Alan Shearer to ensure the Newcastle captain finishes his international career with a trophy.

Shearer's header that gave England their first victory over Germany since 1966 has emphatically rewarded his coach's faith and opened the way to the quarter-finals, where they will take on Italy if they draw with Romania tomorrow.

"I don't think there's another Alan Shearer in England," said Keegan, asked why he would like the Tynesider to overturn his decision to quit international football.

"The best way for him to finish would be to pick up that European Championship trophy. That is a dream at the moment and it is our job to make that a reality for Alan. It's all about going out in style."

Shearer's 29th goal for his country was one of his most important and ensured Keegan would have the greatest single night of his managerial life.

Not even Newcastle's 5-0 victory over Manchester United in October 1996 could have given so many people so much pleasure.

"He is an outstanding striker because, although that goal on Saturday night looked a simple finish, an inexperienced forward might have snatched at it and might not have been able to get the timing and the power that Alan achieved."

Despite saying in an emotional speech on Saturday night that he wanted Shearer to lead England into the 2002 World Cup qualifying campaign, Keegan will not attempt do overturn his captain's decision.

He said: "I don't want anybody to say they no longer want to play for England again (something Keegan himself did when dropped by Bobby Robson after the 1982 World Cup Finals).

"I am disappointed he is retiring because I still think he has got something to offer. Despite the alternatives we have got, if you were England manager, you would pick him just like I do because you know there is nobody better.

"It is up to the other strikers to force their way in by performing well when they get the chance. Alan knows I was very disappointed when he announced his retirement.

"I asked him to think about it and he said he had considered it over a period of six or seven months. I don't think he will change his mind but, if he did, I for one will be delighted."

This would have been slightly dodgy in a national paper - but in the Journal????

OK who on here enjoyed the England result more than the 5-0?

I've got to admit that i'm not really an england fan but I enjoyed the result at the weekend a lot!!......not even in the same league as the 5-0.....they'd humiliated us at the charity shield and we paid them back in spades!!

Being Novocastrian the England games don't mean to much to me but everyones life has special moments. The 5-0 is up there with the best.

No way, Jonno - not in same league although it was nice to see the press and media backpedalling madly about Shearer.

The 3-0 last season wasn't too shabby either!

Makes yer sick with the two-faced crap we / Shearer / Newcastle have to put up with.

The turnaround is almost as dramatic as that dished out after Princess Diana carked it.

Great quote from the Daily Star (off of 365)

>>Steven Gerrard last night again stuck the boot in on his Liverpool teammate Dietmar Hamann. After hitting the German playmaker with a crunching tackle, the 20-year-old said: 'He squealed like a girl. You can tell him that'.<<

Super :-)
