I'm an ophthalmologist and I recently purchased a digital camera for clinical photographs. Like you, my focus was on a camera with good macro capabilities. I tested the Nikon coolpix990 and the SonyDCS70. I purchased the Sony for the simple reason that I own a Sony notebook with a built in memorystick reader (Sony's proprietary flash memory), I have been very pleased with the flexibility of the camera in taking macro pictures, intraoperative pictures, and pictures or radiographical images. I believe the Nikon has a closer working distance, and therefore greater macro range than the sony, but to take pitures of skin lesions, both cameras are probably adequate.
