Northwest flight makes emergency landing in Charleston June 18, 2000, 4:40 PM

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- A Northwest Airlines DC-9 carrying 117 passengers was forced to make an emergency landing after losing an engine.

Flight 1122 from Raleigh to Detroit landed safely on one engine Saturday at Yeager Airport, Northwest spokesman Jon Austin said Sunday.

No one was hurt.

The pilots shut down one engine after a clogged filter indicator light came on, showing something was blocking flow of oil in that engine, Austin said.

It is not known what was causing the blockage.

Michigan passenger Frank Boaedy told WCHS-TV that metal filings had been detected in the oil.

Some of the passengers where put on a Northwest Airlink commuter flight to Detroit, operated by Mesaba Airlines. The remaining passengers spent the night in Charleston at a hotel and flew to Detroit Sunday, Austin said.

Meanwhile, the plane was grounded in West Virginia until the engine can be replaced on Monday, Austin said.
