Focus problems on Nikon 990

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Has anyone experienced focus problems on 990? I get intermittent problems (usually after zooming to max telephoto) where subsequent pictures are out of focus. Sometimes it clears up by a reset function. At other times I need to open battery compartment. Nikon tech support hasn't been very helpful (they recommended the reset). Should I take it back or wait for a firmware upgrade?

Mine works fine even with wide angle lens attached. It depends on "where" you bought the camera: at local dealers, they will let you exchange (if they have any in stock) ; but if through the mail, you may have to send it back to Nikon and it may be a l o n g wait.

I've also had focussing problems as well that i can't easily explain. I put a post on http://photo.askey.net/misc/links.asp and got several back with people with similar problems. One thing that did come out as 2 common threads were poor lighting makes it worse and don't use "a" mode , stick to "m". This has improved things for me. However i still don't think its as good as my old Point Click and No Worries 950. I personally smell a firmware upgrade on its way !!! Hope this helps

It turned out to be a problem with my particular camera. It would occasionaly fail to focus in bright sunlight and also when the distance was set in manual mode. I returned the camera to the retailer and got an replacement that works fine. In retrospect, I'm glad I paid a little extra and purchased from my local Ritz Camera dealer. They were great about the exchange and provided an immediate replacement.
